IMPHAL, Apr 14: Reacting to the press statement issued by the Tamenglong Block Congress Committee-I accusing SDO/PO (NREGS) Joseph Pauline of misappropriating about Rs 4 lakhs meant for payment to Tharon villagers as published in this paper on April 10 issue, the Tharon Villa Authority chairman has dismissed the charges as baseless.
A statement issued by Tharon Village Authority chairman Keirenlungbou Dichongta also condemned the BCC-I Tamenglong for levelling false charges against the sincere and devoted official. The word ‘imposter Chairman’ levelled against Keirenlungbou is baseless as the chairman has been holding the post for the past three years and have been re-elected to chairmanship unanimously as per the election code of conduct, it contended.
Clarifying that SDO/PO (NREGS) Tamenglong Joseph Pauline is innocent in the implementation of NREGS programme of Tharon village, it appealed to the general public not to be misguided by the allegation of vested political interest groups against a sincere Government official.
VPC condemns: While condemning the attempt to kidnap Moreh College Principal S Lungjapao Vaiphei, Vaiphei Peoples Council urged the State Government to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.
Fire Service Week

IMPHAL, Apr 14: As in other parts of the country, the Fire Service Day 2008 and Fire Service Week 2008 (April 14-20) observation have been kicked off today. The observation is in remembrance of the 66 fire fighters who died in fighting an inferno at Mumbai in 1944 with the objective to create awareness among the mass about the risk of fire mishaps and preventive measures. Even though the Fire Service Department was established in Manipur on April 14, 1957, limited awareness on the part of people about possible causes of fire mishaps, negligence and lack of adequate of man power, equipment and fire service sub-stations have been causing heavy casualty and loss at the time of fire mishaps. According to the Fire Advisory norms of the country, there should a fire station for a distance after every 5/7 kms. Each station should have at least 17 fire men.
However, there are only 16 fire stations for the whole State of Manipur. These stations are located at Imphal, Moirang, Churachandpur, Thoubal, Kakching, Jiribam, Mayang Imphal, Tamenglong, Bishnupur, Moreh, Kangpokpi, Ukhrul, Senapati, Chandel, Sugnu and Singhat. At these fire stations excepting Imphal, there are only about 7/8 fire men. Even though the Imphal fire service station is capable of combating two fire accidents at the same time, no other station is equipped to fight two fire mishaps simultaneously.
Other than the Imphal station, other stations are equipped with only a jeep and a fire tender each. Such acute shortage of manpower and equipment has been severely crippling these fire stations. Speaking to these reporter, an official of the Manipur Fire Service Department asserted that it needs a strong public pressure to improvise and enhance the fire-fighting capability of the Manipur Fire Service.
At a time when the term ‘Fire Service’ is being replaced with ‘Fire Emergency Service’, the existing infrastructure of the Manipur Fire Service Department remains quite pathetic, he lamented. According to the norms of the National Building Construction, for every building rising to 15 metres or above, it is mandatory to seek approval from the Fire Service Department. However, the norm is never followed in Manipur, the official decried. Conceding that fire fighters cannot restore a burnt structure, he appealed to the public to help fire fighters control fire mishaps and cooperate in their struggle to prevent a raging fire from engulfing other surrounding structures.
AR donates water tanks
IMPHAL, Apr 14: Commandant of 18 Assam Rifles after having discussion with villagers presented a water tank each of 1000 litres to Kampang Khunou and Lamlong on April 12.
Personnel of the same Battalion also helped a child from Tengnoupal in refering to RIMS Hospital after he had developed acute breathlessness all of a sudden. The child was first given first aid at its hospital.

Stirs lined up
IMPHAL, Apr 14: With the deadline set to the Government in connection with the killing of Inaothoibi, a you-ng widow, over, the JAC formed in this connection has resolved to take recourse to various intense agitation with effect from April 16.
The spokesperson of the JAC H Imo said that with the expiry of the deadline serv-ed to the Govt today, the proposed agitations were to be launched from tomorrow. However, with the Asthi Sanchay of the victim due to be held tomorrow, it has been decided to launch the agitation from April 16.
Public rally, hunger stri-ke, slogan shouting in front of DC office, etc are among the form of agitations to be launched for the first phase and would be followed by road block, the spokes-person disclosed.

AR leadership seminar
IMPHAL, Apr 8: The 22 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector based in Maram of Senapati district organised a day long seminar on April 6 for the local students on various challenges faced by the children with mental disorder.
Informing that over 150 students of St Xaviers School, Makhan attended the seminar, a release of the PRO IGAR (S) said lead speaker Commandant 22 AR, having extensive specialised training at national and international levels urged the students to take enough care of disabled children.
Calling upon the students to view these children as specially abled and not as handicapped, the Commandant also highlighted the crucial role of parents and teachers in understanding the peculiar and special capabilities and needs of their children and students.
World health day
IMPHAL, Apr 8: The Lions Club of Leimarol, Imphal yesterday observed the World Health Day at the premises of the School of Nursing, Khabeisoi, Porompat.
The observance function was marked by educa- tional lecture and talk given by Dr P Rajmani Singh of Lions Club of Imphal and Dr H Ibemhal Devi, chair-person of Health Committee of Lions Club of Leimarol, Imphal. Forest Dept decried
IMPHAL, Apr 8: Meeyam-gi Yaipha Maikei, Sekmaijin Khunou has decried the alleged failure of the Forest Department and its officials concerned to come and pick up an injured Sangai fawn (brow antler deer and State animal) that has been strayed into human habitation area inspite of being informed repeatedly.
According to secretary general of the organisation NC Sanjoy, the fawn was rescued by the local residents in an injured condi- tion from Sekmaijin Maning Leikai (Thoubal district) area early in the morning today after it swam across Manipur river and strayed into human habitation area.
Information had been given to the Chief Wild Lid Warden, but till late evening no one has come to pick up the animal, Sanjoy lamented.

IMPHAL, Apr 8: The Zeli-angrong Students’ Union, Tamenglong district has expressed deep sorrow over the sad demise of its officials namely L Tongsin, 32, Executive Engineer of Railway Construction Division, of Churachandpur; P Gogoi, Assistant Engineer of Shivsagar, Assam and Dri-ver Ranu Dev of Silchar who met with an accident yesterday at around noon near Tatbung village along Imphal-Jiribam Road (NH-53) while they were on their way to investigate in connection with construction of the Jiri-Tupul Railway line.

Airport expansion
IMPHAL, Apr 8: Alleging that the Congress Block level conference scheduled for April 10 at Mekola Bazar is another effort of the Ibobi Government to befool the people of the area on Airport expansion, JAC Against the Acquisition of Land for Expansion and Extension of Imphal Airport warned the organisers not to organise such conference inside Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC. The JAC will put its full effort to stop the conference and the Government would be responsible for the consequences, a press statement warned.
KSO urges
IMPHAL, Apr 8: Kuki Students’ Organisation, Tuilang Block (IT Road) urged the Works Minister K Ranjit to conduct a spot enquiry on the work progress of the IT Road. Conveying that a team of the students’ body during its spot enquiry found the construction works had not maintained quality, while many spots need resurfacing again, KSO informed the Minister that a large portion of the stretch has not yet started construction.

IMPHAL, Apr 8: Along with arriving at an understanding , a joint meeting of the leaders of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) Headquarters and Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), General headquarters held at AMSU headquarters today to discuss the issue related to Moreh College has resolved to jointly inspect the condition of the said college probably on April 10 to find out ways and means of development of the college in the interest of the student community. IMPHAL, Apr 8: On the first day of the 10 awareness programmes on road safety to be organised by Weaker Section Empowerment and Vocational Education Society (WEAVES), Takyel Khongbal Mayai, Imphal West Traffic Police ASI Kh Shyam Singh and other resource persons today gave awareness to the students of Ibotonsana Girls Higher Secondary School.
Awareness will also be given to the students of Kebol Girls Higher Secondary School, Tera Keithel, NAIMS Academy, Langol, Bless Higher Secondary School, Tera Keithel and Paree Imom Sindam Sang, Langjing one after another upto April 15.

ICHAM urges Govt
IMPHAL, Apr 8: Information Centre for Hill Areas, Manipur (ICHAM) and Kharao Khaorui-Yairum Naga Students Association (KKYNSA) in a recent visit to 18 villages of Saikul, Chingai, Ukhrul and Karong ACs found that facilities of education, health, electricity and road are deplorable. ICHAM submitted a memorandum to Education Minister in this connection, while the Minister also assured to construct new building of Kachai High School by putting the proposal in the work programme. Maintaining that cold diarrhoea and malaria still kill many in remote areas, ICHAM also urged to provide better medical facilities to these areas.

IMPHAL, Apr 8: Alleging that Mapithel Dam, Nongdam Dam and Thoubal Dam were constructed without proper survey, Sikibung/Sharkaphung Village Authority appreciated the visit of expert committee members to Sikiphung Village on April 3. The organisation also appealed the authorities concerned to act fairly in terms of expedition survey to avoid unwanted consequences.

IMPHAL, Apr 8: Based on specific information troops of 10 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector launched operation in the general area of Haika near Sajik Tampak on April 7 during which a PLA cadre identified as SS Pvt Loken (36) s/o Mangal Singh of Sugnu was arrested, informed a PRO IGAR (S) release. stating that Loken (No 2273) was apprehended during a futile attempt to breach the security dragnet taking advantage of darkness, the PRO conveyed that the arrested person has been handed over to Kakching police station today.

IMPHAL, Apr 8: DESAM appealed the Centre Superintendents of the ongoing NIOS exams to take part in a meeting to be convened on April 10 at 10 am at DESAM headquarters. The students body also said that those teachers who are absent in the said meeting would be rated as against quality education.
