BSF endeavour continues

IMPHAL, Mar 29: After similar gestures for the people of Yairipok and Thoubal Kshetri Leikai the BSF today gifted a welfare centre to the women folk of Nongpok Sekmai by providing 10 sewing machines and a colour television set.
The centre constructed under the civic action programme of the sentinel of the borders was inaugurated by Commandant of BSF’s 88 Bn Sham Kapoor.
Addressing the gathering the Commandant said the BSF presented the sewing machines to the women to help them in supplementing their earnings.
“BSF has further plans to extend not only material but moral and educational support as well to the women and other section of the society,” Sham Kapoor asserted while reiterating BSF’s commitment for providing a peaceful and secure atmosphere to the local population.
Visibly pleased with the BSF initiatives the Nongpok Sekmai citizens conveyed gratitude to authorities of the BSF.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: A block level seminar on “Cooperative for Women, Youth Em- powerment and Social Justice” was held today at dis- trict cooperative marketing complex, Nambol Ching-mang under the aegis of the NCUI, Cooperative Education, Field Project, Bishnu- pur. The seminar was attended by District Coope- rative officer M Birendra, chairman of Project Coordination Committee Kh Borkishore and Zonal ARCS Y Ningthembasu as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

JIRIBAM, Mar 29: Taking strong exception to the failure of the Government to take up repairing and development work of the Kaiphundai-Tousem road even as many precious lives have been lost in mishaps due to the deplorable condition of the road, the Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Barak Valley has urged upon the Government to initiate repairing work of the road within April. The student body informed that one Parilung of Aben village died in a mishap along the road on March 24. It warned that intense forms of agitation will be launched if the repairing work of the road is not initiated within April, reports our Jiri correspondent.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: About 750 grams of opium was seized by a team of NAB personnel led by OC NAB from one Lenthang Kipgen (30) s/o Lutkam Kipgen of Heikun village under Sapermeina police station from the southern side of Khuman Lampak bus terminus at about 3 pm today, informed a release issued by SP/CPCR A Amirlal Sharma.
CADA hands over
IMPHAL, Mar 29: Goods reportedly sold out by drug abusers after stealing them from tent houses have been handed over to the owners after they were recovered by the CADA. The recovered goods include 24 korfu, 200 discs and five kettles.
These articles were stolen by two drug abusers from tent houses located at Moirangkhom, Singjamei, Waikhom Leikai and Kakwa on March 23.
Run for Peace
MOREH, Mar 29: Run for Peace and Harmony organised by 24 AR was flagged from near Moreh police station by 24 AR commandant Vikas Saini at 6.30 am today, reports our Moreh correspondent. The race partici- pated by about 50 students terminated at the IB post of of 24 AR.. The race was won by Daniel Minthang Baite in boys’ section and Ruth Chetri in girls’ section.

IMPHAL, Mar 29 : The corpse of Sera Banu who succumbed on the way to Shija Hospital after she was shot by some unidentified persons at Keirao Makting Makha Leikai under Irilbung police station last night remains unclaimed. On the other hand, a Joint Action Committee has been constituted against the killing. Sera Banu (23), wife of Md Najub Ali left behind three daughters. She was pregnant.
Around 20 armed persons came to Sera Banu’s home last night asking for her husband. When she told them that he was not at home, the armed men opened fire towards Sera Banu wantonly. Md Najub runs a workshop for steel win-dows and doors and iron almirahs at Hatta.
In connection with the killing, a public meeting was held today after which a joint action committee has been constituted. The meeting resolved to urge the Govt to protect the lives of innocent civilians. It also resolved not to claim the corpse of Sera Banu until and unless the killers are identified and booked under law.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: Timely treatment of a snake bite victim by medical personnel of 12 Maratha Light Infantry saved the life of one Angangthoi Koijam Bokha (19) s/o Akoijam Kiran of Ningombam village, said a release of PRO Hqs IGAR (S) today.
According to the release, Angangthoi was bitten by a poisonous snake on the left foot while fishing and was brought to the Battalion hospital in critical condition yesterday after which the medical officer administered anti-snake venom treatment to save his life.
When his condition stabilised, he was discharged from the hospital, it added.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: The result of the essay competition held in connection with the observance of National Consumer Day 2007 on the topic ‘Awareness of Consumer Rights and Public Distribution System in Manipur’ has been declared. Kangabam Birachandra Singh of Langdum Mamang Leikai, Thoudam Umitkumar Singh of Imphal College and Tongbram Meghachandra Singh of Keibul Lamjao bagged first, second and third respectively. Consolation prizes went to Kangabam Debarani Devi, Pukhrambam Jyoti Devi and Thokchom Sandhyarani Devi. Date and time of distribution of prizes will be announced later, said a press release.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: A joint statement issued by chairmen of Uran Chiru Village Authority, Nungkot Khuman Village and Nungkot Kom Village conveyed that these villages have not been getting their share of rice and SK oil from the beginning of 2007.
Camp concludes
IMPHAL, Mar 29: A 15 day residential adventure aw-areness camp held at the Manipur Mountaineering Institute, Lamdan concluded on March 26. The camp jointly organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) was participated 63 students from all the nine districts of Manipur besides 8 students from Arunachal Pradesh, informed an MMTA release.
The campers included 22 girls, added the release.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: Teaching and non-teaching staff of DM College of Science condemned the shoot-out of March 27 in an emergency meeting convened today. The staff also urged the concerned not to repeat such incident in the campus of the college.

On the other and, an over ground sympathiser of the PREPAK was arrested by Thoubal police commandos at about 11 am today. The sympathiser is identified as Akoijam Dineshwar alias Dinesh (30) s/o Kalachand of Thoubal Wangma Taba.

IMPHAL, Mar 29: A one day seminar on youth and women empowerment covering other themes such as misuse of drugs and alcohol, male and female inequality, dowry and gender issues and female foeticide was held today at Female Health Workers’ Training School at RD Wing complex today. The seminar was jointly organised by the Youth and Resource Organisation (YRO) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Imphal. The inaugural function of the seminar was attended by NYKS regional coordinator Kh Ibohanbi, Principal of the Female Health Workers Training School Y Sunita and Head of Political Science Department MU Prof Ksh Bimola as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
