Council accuses village chiefs
JIRIBAM, Apr 1: The Zomi Council Jiri-Vangai Range has alleged that village chiefs in collusion with secretaries had been adopting partisan policy in the issuance of job card under the NREGS programme in Vangai Range areas of churachandpur district. President of the Council Hena Vaiphei confided to this correspondent on the misuse of power by the village chief and secretaries while distributing the job cards and called upon authority concerned to take appropriate measures so that the noble scheme justify its purpose. The president also highlighted that Government schools in Vangai Range are in dilapidated condition due to lack of attention by the State authorities for the past two decades. While appealing to the district administration to look into the matter with all seriousness in order to prevent the Council resort to agitation to highlight the case. A meeting convened by the Council at Buangmun village of churachandpur on March 25 which was attended by intellectuals, social leaders and student activists had adopted resolution to apprise authorities on the said matters for appropriate action failing which the Council would be constraint to launch the agitation, added Hena Vaiphei.
KYKL cadre arrested
IMPHAL, Apr 1: 34 Assam Rifles nabbed one cadre of proscribed KYKL today during a search operation at Ningel. The cadre has been identified as SS Cpl Langam Sadanam Singh alias Devam (20) s/o Lachao Singh of Ningel. Twelve live rounds of AK 47 rifle has been recovered from his possession.
Student killed
IMPHAL, Apr 1: A 13-year student coming out from home for coaching class was crushed to death by a bus near his residential gate at Phoubakchao Ekhai under Moirang Police Station at around 5 am today. The bus bearing registration no. MN01/128 was coming from Imphal and heading towards Churachandpur when the incident occurred.
The victim has been identified as Keisham Bishwajit (13) s/o K Tomba of Phoubakchao Ekhai. After hitting the boy, the bus reportedly sped off and later surrendered at Chura-chandpur Police Station.
The body has been handed over to the bereaved family members after post-mortem examination at the mortuary of RIMS.
UG hijacked BRTF vehicle escapes arson

IMPHAL, Apr 1: One cement laden vehicle (tipper) belonging to the BRTF reportedly managed to speed off from the clutches of the same group of armed activists who hijacked and set ablaze three other trucks at near Nongmaiching Nung-oi Maru Nungpak village yesterday.
According to police report, four BRTF vehicles loaded with cement were heading for Litan from its Lamphelpat headquarters before being halted by four motor cycle born unidentified persons over a bridge situated in between Pundo-ngbam and lamlai bazar.
With three of the youths boarding on one vehicle each and a lone motor-cyclist leading the vehicles towards Takhel side along the Kamu Chingjin road, the vehicle bringing up rear took a sharp turn from near Lamlai Loukon Chingkhong and sped back to the Lamphel-pat headquarters of the BRTF, the police report elaborated. Meanwhile, the three burnt vehicles are yet to be retrieved from the incident spot till late evening.
Grenade recovered: A point 32 HC hand grenade has been recovered today at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai under Imphal west Police Station by labourers during the removal of the earth piled up some time back from dredging of the nearby drains. The bomb has been retrieved by police at around 2:15 in this afternoon.
UJJAWALA scheme
IMPHAL, Apr 1: Beneficiaries of the NGOs in the State listed for implementation of the UJJAWALA scheme already launched by the Govt of India to financially rehabi- litate commercial sex workers in the country have urged for forwarding the list to the authorities concerned for proper implementation of the scheme. Addressing a press conference in this connection at Manipur Press Club here today, the beneficiaries of the listed NGOs informed that the said scheme was formally launched by the Government of India on December 4 last year. For first phase of the scheme, NGOs based in nine districts of the State applied but the authorities concerned selected only two NGOs based in two districts namely Chandel and Senapati. For the second phase, 61 NGOs have applied out of which 27 NGOs 3 each based in Tamenglong, Imphal East, Imphal West, Chura-chandpur, Ukhrul, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts have been selected by the State Level Selection Committee. However, the list of the selected NGOs is yet been forwarded to the authorities concerned.
CRPF men donate blood
IMPHAL, Apr 1: On the occasion of its 18th Raising Day today 152 personnel of the 128 Bn CRPF stationed at Mongsangei today donated blood at its battalion headquarters. The blood donation programme was formally inaugurated by the DIG (CRPF) GS Gill.
It may be noted that in 2006, 165 personnel of the unit had also donated blood with the number increasing to 285 during the previous raising day celebration.
Killing flayed, protest staged

IMPHAL, Apr 1: Decrying the killing of Longjam Uttamkumar, the JAC for-med in protest against the killing staged a Wakat Meepham at Keisham-thong Keithel here today.
The protest session demanded punishment of the Commandos responsible for the killing within 72 hours. Placards with slogans like ‘Issue license gun to protect ourselves’, ‘Human life should not be bargained with ex-gratia’, ‘Lets save Manipur from becoming a killing field’, etc were used by the protestors during the demonstration.
It may be recalled here that Longjam Uttamkumar was shot dead by some security personnel in civvics near his own residential gate at Keishampat Long-jam Leirak at around 3.30 pm on March 29.
The family members have refused to take back the body demanding punishment of the killers.
Killer husband sent to Sajiwa
IMPHAL, Apr 1: Maisnam Jatishore (55) of Uripok Bachaspati Leikai, husband of Maisnam Ongbi Angou-bi alias Gaidonglunglu (52), who has been accused of stabbing his wife to death at her RIMS sweeper colony quarters at Lamphel on March 19 has been send to Sajiwa Jail after being produced in the court of CJM Imphal today.
While being taken to the court, police have to confront around 100 angry men and women who were demanding to hand over the accused near the gate of the court.
KRA’s deadline
IMPHAL, Apr 1: Giving three days time, the armed outfit KRA has asked two persons identified as John and Rahul who allegedly demanded money from various Government departments, shops and Tata Sumo counters in the name of the outfit to surrender or face dire consequences if they fail to do so.
According to information and publicity secretary of KRA TH Misao, the outfit would be constraint to award them capital punishment if the accused do not surrender within the said deadline.
He also appealed to all the people to hand over the accused to the local clubs, organisation or other NGOs if they happen came across them while coming to extort money.
Army goodwill drive continues
IMPHAL, Apr 1: As a part of the MCA programme, 18 Assam Rifles Commandant dedicated a water supply scheme to the villagers of RR centre on March 26. The Commandant while interacting with the villagers promised to take up more developmental programmes at the village.
The Commandant also donated two sintex (1000 litres) tanks and two volleyballs to Chelap village authority the same day. 22 Assam Rifles provided emergency life saving care to one Rocky of Thingba Khullen at its Unit Hospital. Rocky shot his left hand accidentally while he was hunting.
Meanwhile, Maratha LI celebrated Shangshak Day on March 26 to pay tribute to the brave martyrs of Maratha LI laid down their lives during World War II.
ANSAM conference
IMPHAL, Apr 1: The 10th general conference of All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur will be held from April 2 till 5 at Ntreiramphung (Tumnoupokpi) village of Senapati district for which the hosts appeal to former ANSAM functionaries and well wishers as well as representatives of Naga social and student bodies to grace the occasion.
Zoo to open on Cheiraoba
IMPHAL, Apr 1: Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife (HQ) and Manipur Zoological Park informed the general public that Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroisemba will remain open on April 7 in connection with Cheiraoba festival. The zoo will remain closed on Tuesday.
Road safety
IMPHAL, Apr 1: Weaker Section Empowerment and Vocational Educational Society (WEAVES), Takyel Khongbal Mayai Leikai will organise 10 awareness programmes on Road Safety at different schools, colleges and public places of Imphal West district from April 8 to 15.
The programme is sponsored by Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, New Delhi.
Council of Youths’ for Development and Co-operation, Keibi will host an inaugural function for awareness programmes and painting competition on Road Safety at Oriental English School and Keibi High School April 6.
AR seizures
IMPHAL, Apr 1: A team of 22 Assam rifles confiscated 123 kg of ganja from a Maruti Car driven by one Daihrii at Maram area yesterday morning, informed Senapati-Karong Area Women’s Association.
In another instance 450 litres of illicit liquor had been seized from a truck bearing registration No NL01A/9819 at around 2.30 pm yesterday from Senapati bazar area, the Association added while expressing gratitude to the AR team for its effort in curbing sale and consumption of harmful substances.
Workshop on education
IMPHAL, Apr 1: UGC-Academic Staff College, Manipur University will organise a three-day workshop on the topic, “Higher Education in the State and Country: Present Scenerio” from April 17 to 19 to explore the mindset of contemporary Indian intelligentsia. MU Academic Administrators and principals of affiliated and permitted colleges may submit application forms on or before April 10.
