KNF (Z) appts
IMPHAL, Jul 1: Along with the change of the letter head of KNF (Zogam) reshuffling of the portfolio in respect of those in-charge of the financial matters have been effected.
Consequently, Nehkam Haokip alias Gary Haokip, Khupmang alias SK Hao-kip, Nehthang Haokip alias Iron, Jamkholen Lhungdim alias JL Kuki and Nehlun Haokip are no more in-char-ge of the financial matters of the outfit and they are not authorised to deal with the financial matters from today, secretary information of KNF (Z) Gideon Kuki said, adding that those who keep financial dealing with these persons would be doing at their own risk.
While informing that Seikhokai alias James, Lelen Khongsai and their accomplices have been collecting money with the knowledge or authorisation of the organisation, the secretary information of KNF (Z) has appealed to all the people and organisations to arrest them if they come to collect money.
Found hung to death
IMPHAL, Jul 1: A man staying at a rented room at Hatta Golapati under Poro-mpat police station was found hung to death yesterday at about 4.30 pm.
The deceased is identified as Sanabam Khelen (30) s/o Nodiyachand of Yairi-pok Yambem Makha Leikai.
Khelen was a married man with two daughters and a son even though he had divorced from his wife.
On May 26 this year, Khelen came to the house of one Md Babu of Hatta Golapati along with a woman said to be his wife and a girl of seven years, said to be his daughter. Since then he has been staying there at a rented room.
However, when Khelen was found inside the room yesterday, the woman and the girl had already left the room taking with them clothes and some belon-gings. With registration of a case in Porompat PS, the corpse was handed over to family members after post mortem at RIMS.
Painting competition results
IMPHAL, Jul 1: Position winners in different categories of the painting competition organised by Manipur Pollution Control Board Employees' Association on June 24 at Tamphasana Higher Secondary School in connection with the World Environment Day 2007 has been announced, informed an Association release while adding that prize would be distributed on July 11 at 1 pm at the office of the Board.
The winners in senior group are Soram Sanathoiba (Cl-VI) of St Joseph's School (1st), LN Tinku (Cl-VIII) of DAV Public School (2nd) and Kshetrimayum Rojesh Singh (Cl-VIII) of Shantilata Memorial School (3rd).
Maria Montessori School made a clean sweep of the top three positions in the junior group with Maria Thokchom (Cl-V) bagging the first prize, Khwairakpam Amarjeet (Cl-IV) securing the runner-up spot while Sonia Thiyam (Cl-V) occupied the third slot.
Meanwhile, in collaboration with Child Rights and You (CRY), Wide Angle Social Development Organisation, Keishampat Junction organised a painting competition for children at Planet Kids, Keishampat in which 64 children took part.
In Category - A, Heritage Convent, Uripok's class III student Sayona Kshetrimayum bagged the top prize followed by G Ratankumari (Cl-III) of Salvation Academy, Kwakeithel and Laishram Shitaljit Meitei (Cl-III) of St Peters High School, Kwakeithel in the second and third positions respectively. Recruitment rally
IMPHAL, Jul 1: Army recruitment rally for the southern districts of Manipur was formally inaugurated yesterday at Pallel with IG AR (S) Maj Gen BK Chengapa as chief guest, informed a PIB (DW) release.
The rally being organised by Army Recruitment Office, Rangapahar with support from Hqs 26 Sector AR was flagged off by Maj Gen BK Chengapa. About 1000 candidates took part in the rally.

IMPHAL, Jul 1: The Aimol Students' Union, Manipur (ASUM) has felicitated 19 first divisioners of HSLC Exam 2007 and 8 HSSLC Exam 2007 during a felicitation ceremony held today at Aimol Khullen, Chandel, conveyed an ASUM release.
The meritorious students were awarded one Oxford Dictionary each in addition to cash incentives, it added.

IMPHAL, Jul 1: Based on specific information troops of the 19 Assam Rifles under HQs IGAR (S) carried out search operation at Yaingangpokpi area and recovered one AK-56 rifle with four magazines and 15 rounds of ammunition during search of a house, informed a PRO, Assam Rifles release issued today.

IMPHAL, Jul 1: The first general conference of the All Tribal Physically Handicapped Association (ATPHA) scheduled for July 2 at Indoor Stadium, Senapati district Hqs has been postponed to July 22 due to some unavoidable circumstances, informed an ATPHA release.
Protest staged
IMPHAL, Jul 1: In protest against the repeated arrest of a former PREPAK cadre who has been leading normal married life for the last 15 years by the Army and demanding his unconditional release, a Wakat Meepham was staged near Imphal College here today.
The protest demonstration was organised under the aegis of Yaipha Thou-rang and Nishaband and Nupi Marup from 9.30 am to 4.30 in protest against the arrest of Toijam Shyam (42) of Kwakeithel Heinou Kho-ngnembi Lamdong Leikai by personnel of 57 Moun-tain Division in the wee hours of June 28.
Army has reportedly handed over Shyam to the Singjamei police.
According to family members, Shyam has been leading a normal life and married for the last 15 years, but he is being arrested by the security forces repeatedly. The aggrieved family members have also appealed to the PREPAK to come out with a clarification in this regard.
AMADA honours cycle rallyists
MPHAL, Jul 1: A reception function in honour of all those who participated in the second mass cycle rally organised by All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) in connection with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held at Kangla Hall today.
The participating cycli-sts, medical team, media- persons who covered event and volunteers were felicit-ated with simple gifts at the occasion.
Dean of Students’ Welfare, Manipur University Prof W Nabakumar and AMADA president L Tomba Meitei were chief guest and president of the reception function which was also attended by Director of RK Sanatombi Devi Research Institute of Social Science Prof N Muhindro and Assistant Director (Coaching) of Youth Affairs and Sports T Purnachandra as guests of honour.
The 2nd mass cycle rally of the AMADA had been flagged off from Kangla on June 21 and it was participated by around 600 people including 350 cyclists and 250 volunteers and other helpers. The rally had co-vered six districts of the State.

New GOC takes over
IMPHAL, Jul 1: Major Gen TS Handa has taken over as the new GOC of Red Shield Division from Major General EJ Kochekkan during an impressive ceremony held at Leimakhong today, said PIB Defence Wing in a statement. The new GOC is an alumni of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the 4th Bn of the Parachute Regiment. With many credits to him, Maj Gen Handa has held crucial staff and instructional appointments in the Army, said PIB and added that the new GOC has experience in handling CI Ops in J and K. Handa was with the Integrated Hqs of Ministry of Defence before his transfer here. The Standing Committee of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union along with Editors of the State dailies organised a simple farewell party for the outgoing GOC, Maj Gen EJ Kochekkan at the Manipur Press Club, said a statement and added that as assured earlier, the GOC presented books worth Rs 50,000 for the library of the Manipur Press Club.
B Sc (Vety) test
IMPHAL, Jul 1: The selection test for admission to five year B Sc (Veterinary) course at Animal Husban-dry and Veterinary College under Central Agriculture University (CAU) was held at State Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Dept today.
Talking to mediapersons in this connection, Secretary of Veterinary and Ani- mal Husbandry KK Chhetry informed that the test was conducted today to selection of eight nominees of the State Govt for pursuing the course and in all 136 candidates appeared in the test.
The subject experts and examiners were provided by the Council of Higher Secondary Education, he said, adding that the results of the selection test is likely to be announced later in the evening today itself.
Rice distributed
JIRIBAM, Jul 1: The Jiri Development Organisation in association with Jiri Ima Meira Paibi distributed rice to the people of Barak circle yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The rice distributed was meant for the month of March issued by the FCS Department but not made available to the people by the agents. In all 60 quintals of rice were distributed by the said NGOs at an afforda-ble price to the poor people.
The AAY rice was sold at Rs 4 per kg and the BPL rice at Rs 7 per kg.

NIT site selection
CM gives thumbs up to Langol

IMPHAL, Jul 1: In accordance with the decision of the State Cabinet, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and his Council of Ministers scouted for a suitable site for construction of the proposed National Institute of Technology (NIT) this morning and come to the conclusion that the land located near the Langol foothill just adjacent to Lamphelpat is the most appropriate site for the NIT.
The team led by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and accompanied by Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh, Principal Secretary (Revenue) P Sharatchandra and Commissioner of Higher Education in-charge S Budhachandra first went to inspect a site at Lilong Chaobok.
But as some womenfolk of the area were already there protesting against the decision of the Government to acquire land for setting up the NIT at Lilong Chaobok, the Ministerial team did not proceeded further and returned.
From there, the Ministerial team directly went o inspect the land located in between Langol Games Village and Shija Hospital.
After the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers opined that it would be the most suitable site for setting up the proposed NIT, the inspection team cancelled its trip to Bishnupur to inspect another site there.
After the visit to Lilong and Langol, a joint meeting of the Ministers and the officials was also held at the office chamber of the Chief Minister to discuss necessary steps to be taken up for acquisition of the required land for construction of the NIT.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on behalf of the Government, Minister N Biren Singh informed that the inspection of the sites had been conducted as the Centre has asked for selecting the site for construction of the proposed NIT, the foundation stone of which had been laid by the Prime Minister during his last visit to the State.
A final decision in this regard would be taken by the State Cabinet day after tomorrow, he disclosed.
While observing that the Government is not in favour of affecting the agricultural land, the Minister explained that since 50 percent of the students who would be studying at the institute will be from outside Manipur, its location near the capital with proper road connectivity should be considered from the security point of view.
The Minister informed that all the agricultural land in Lamphelpat area would be brought under the purview of the Agriculture Department.
However, the necessary projects would be taken up to protect the existing water bodies along with steps to evict the encroachers.
Disclosing that Rs 35 crores has already been kept aside for constructing the NIT, the Minister informed that around 300 acres of land would be acquired by the Govt for the said purpose and most of the land to be acquired are Khasland.

Ibobi moots Municipality status for devt and peace

IMPHAL, Jul 1 : Endorsing the idea that peace has been eluding Moreh because of lack of development and economic stagnancy, Chief Minister O Ibobi today floated the idea of upgrading the border town to the status of a Municipality which would pave the way for development and prosperity and ultimately usher in a climate of peace at the border town.
Community leaders drawn from different section of society of the border town today met the Chief Minister at his official bungalow today to discuss the law and order situation at the border town as well as the means to usher in development there.
With the peace rally staged at Moreh on June 25 as the background, the community leaders discussed the means and ways to usher in peace and during the course of the meeting, the Chief Minister mooted the idea of upgrading the border town to the status of a Municipality.
Speaking to newsmen after the meeting with the Chief Minister, president of Hill Tribal Council, Jalu- mang Haokip said that the Chief Minister was told in no uncertain terms that development is necessary for peace at Moreh and urged him to ensure power supply 24 hours a day, given the hot climate at Moreh. “We assured the CM that taxes would be paid regularly without fail,” he added.
Other issues put up before the Chief Minister included improving the water supply as well as rationalising the taxi fare as the high fare is a burden to the poor people, said Haokip further. Introduction of passenger buses was also suggested.
The Chief Minister was also requested to open the check posts only at Moreh and Pallel and not to open any other posts in between. The Army check post may be opened at Tengnoupal, added Haokip.
President of Meitei Council Moreh, L Imobi hailed the suggestion of the Chief Minister to upgrade Moreh to a Municipality. He added that the proposal of the Chief Minister would be discussed with all the community leaders of Moreh, especially in connection with the plot of land measuring about 35 to 40 acres for the Municipality to come up.
If Moreh is upgraded to the level of a Municipality then financial aid can be procured from the Centre for its development, said Imobi.
Referring to the meeting with the Chief Minister, Imobi said that assurance was given that if the said plot of land can be earmarked then a sum of Rs 200 crores will be pumped in for the border town.
The Chief Minister was in total agreement with the plane of thought that peace has been eluding Moreh because of the lack of economic growth, said Imobi and added that the Chief Minister also assured all possible aid to promote economic growth.
Imobi further said that the Chief Minister informed that strict instructions have been issued to the security forces at Moreh not to foment communal tension during the Unified Command meeting held yesterday in the backdrop of the protest launched by IRB personnel.
President of Tamil Sangam, Moreh M Eusoop Sarlen and president of Manipuri Muslim Council were also present at the meeting.

Two killed in Langol operation

IMPHAL, Jul 1: Two suspected underground activists have been killed by a combined force of Imphal West District Commandos and personnel of 32 Assam Rifles during an operation launched at Langol Games Village Zone-I early morning today.
According to police report, on receiving specific information on the movement of underground elements in Langol Games Vilage area, the combined force cordoned off the area and conducted search operation at around 3.30 am today.
While the operation was underway 3-4 unidentified persons tried to escape and the security forces asked them to stop. But instead stopping, the fleeing persons fired at the security personnel.
The security personnel also retaliated the firing which last for around 15 minutes and killed the two suspected underground activists.
One country made carbine, one magazine loaded with four live rounds of ammunition, one 9 mm pistol loaded with four bullets and one 36 H-2 Hand grenade have also been recovered from the possession of the two slain person whose identities are yet to be established.
The bodies have been picked up and kept at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.
According to police report, the two slain youths appear to be around 30 years of age. One of them was clad in T-shirt grey in colour and cream colour trousers with long hair, strong built and wheatish complexion.
The other was wearing a black T-shirt and faded Jean pant with crop hair and lean body. The ear lobes of both the slain youths were not pierced.

KCP observes Black Day
IMPHAL, Jul 1: In commemoration of the death of the KCP's founder and Deputy Army Chief Yendrenbam Ibohanbi who was martyred in a gun battle between security forces and KCP cadres on July 1, 1995, at Heituppokpi Andro near Baruni hills, KCP observed its Black Day today.
The observance at the party's Ghqs was marked by the observance of two minutes silence and paying of gun salute to the late leader, informed a press release issued by KCP Information and Publicity Secretary H Poirei.
However, the outfit noted that the true purpose of the observance can be achieved only when the liberation struggle is strengthened and move forward in line with the principle and spirit of the late leader.
On the occasion of the Black Day, KCP comrades remembered the ideal principle of sincerity, dedication, humility, fighting for justice, endurance, unyielding spirit etc as envisaged and followed by Baji Ibohanbi. The KCP further called upon all the revolutionary groups of not only Kangleipak but of the whole North East region to understand the inevitability of a single revolutionary leader and to focus on building up united strength.

RIMS denies
Reacting to a news report on alleged denial of Nevirapine to HIV positive an expectant mother by the doctors/paramedics on duty, RIMS authority has asserted that the internal inquiry conducted found that the allegation was not factual. In a statement, Media Advisor of RIMS Iboyaima Laithangbam said the expectant mother in question was administered her dose of Nevirapine one day ahead and it was felt not necessary to prescribe the same again and the doctors decided to administer the dose to the baby. So there is no question of negligence on the part of the doctors and nurses on duty of RIMS or denying the said drug to the expectant mother or any patient in RIMS, the statement contended.
James Kuki
Duty Magistrate of Judicial Magistrate First Class (Imphal East) Premila has remanded James Kuki, the main accused in the murder of Elizabeth, till July 4. James Kuki is in police custody after being arrested by the CBI some time back.

Hair salon ransacked
MPHAL, Jul 1:
Infuriated local people ransacked a hair salon run by some non-Manipuris at Lamphel Super Market at around 10.40 am today after the attending barbers allegedly misbehaved with one girl who came to get a hair cut. Accor-ding to information received by the press, there were in all three chairs with three attending barbers in the said hair salon. Two girls from Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai came for hair cuts at the salon while a youth from Thingel Maru was already having his hair cut. When the youth overheard the two non-Manipuri barbers who were attending on the two girls exchanging some lewd remarks in Hindi, he looked up only to find one of the bar-bers groping on the body his customer. The youth reacted immedia-tely and beat up the barber and alerted other people who subsequently ransac-ked the salon. On receiving the report, Lamphel police arrived at the scene. But the three non-Manipur barbers have already fled.

Auto drivers' woes
Presenting their woeful conditions, the Emoinu Diesel Auto Owner's Co-operative Society Ltd has today stated that they are caught in a bind between meeting the monetary demands of NGOs and clubs while at the same time paying back the loans procured from the State Bank of India. In a statement the Society lamented that they are unable to meet the monetary demands as well as fulfilling the demands from the NGOs and Clubs and added that until and unless they manage to clear the bank loans, they will not be able to fulfil the monetary demands from clubs and NGOs.
