NIT site selection
CM gives thumbs up to Langol

IMPHAL, Jul 1: In accordance with the decision of the State Cabinet, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and his Council of Ministers scouted for a suitable site for construction of the proposed National Institute of Technology (NIT) this morning and come to the conclusion that the land located near the Langol foothill just adjacent to Lamphelpat is the most appropriate site for the NIT.
The team led by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and accompanied by Chief Secretary Jarnail Singh, Principal Secretary (Revenue) P Sharatchandra and Commissioner of Higher Education in-charge S Budhachandra first went to inspect a site at Lilong Chaobok.
But as some womenfolk of the area were already there protesting against the decision of the Government to acquire land for setting up the NIT at Lilong Chaobok, the Ministerial team did not proceeded further and returned.
From there, the Ministerial team directly went o inspect the land located in between Langol Games Village and Shija Hospital.
After the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers opined that it would be the most suitable site for setting up the proposed NIT, the inspection team cancelled its trip to Bishnupur to inspect another site there.
After the visit to Lilong and Langol, a joint meeting of the Ministers and the officials was also held at the office chamber of the Chief Minister to discuss necessary steps to be taken up for acquisition of the required land for construction of the NIT.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting at Chief Minister’s Secretariat on behalf of the Government, Minister N Biren Singh informed that the inspection of the sites had been conducted as the Centre has asked for selecting the site for construction of the proposed NIT, the foundation stone of which had been laid by the Prime Minister during his last visit to the State.
A final decision in this regard would be taken by the State Cabinet day after tomorrow, he disclosed.
While observing that the Government is not in favour of affecting the agricultural land, the Minister explained that since 50 percent of the students who would be studying at the institute will be from outside Manipur, its location near the capital with proper road connectivity should be considered from the security point of view.
The Minister informed that all the agricultural land in Lamphelpat area would be brought under the purview of the Agriculture Department.
However, the necessary projects would be taken up to protect the existing water bodies along with steps to evict the encroachers.
Disclosing that Rs 35 crores has already been kept aside for constructing the NIT, the Minister informed that around 300 acres of land would be acquired by the Govt for the said purpose and most of the land to be acquired are Khasland.
