Medical camp organised
IMPHAL, May 20: A reproductive child health outreach medical camp was organised by Primary Health Centre (PHC), Somdal at Aphung village in Ukhrul district under the sponsorship of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) on May 17.
Three stalls were put up under three sections — general, ayush and malaria — during the camp marked by the participation of villagers from Torah, Torah Shimhon, Upper and Lower Leisan, Maichon, Khamason, Aphung Shimhon under the care of doctors and nurses from PHC Somdal, said a release of secretary Aphung village authority Mr Jonathan.
Inaugurating the occasion, the village chairman KS Wonmi said, with the joint initiative of the Centre and State Govt, implementation of NHRM scheme has benefitted many villagers by providing immunisation facilities every month besides ensuring JSY scheme for women during their period of delivery. Appre- ciating various programmes under different schemes being undertaken by the Govt, Jonathan maintained that such developments have brought awareness among the villagers especially on how to keep themselves healthy and urged the masses to extend full cooperation to any positive efforts being initiated by the Govt. The village chairman also expressed gratitude to Ukhrul DC K Pankaj Kumar Pal, director of NRHM/CMO Ukhrul H Jadumani Singh, district programme manager Rajiv Singh, Dr R Ningsang and his team in particular.
AMADA pulls up fraud

IMPHAL, May 20: AMADA Govindgram Local Council has been able to pull up a woman who has been duping gullible people of their hard-earned month by promising that their money could be multiplied after performing certain rites and rituals.
A total amount of Rs 1,48,900 she had swindled from the gullible public in this manner has also been recovered by AMADA.
The woman identified as Chungkham Ningol Sanamacha alias Phajabi alias Pakpi Devi (40) d/o Chungkham Shangaijao Singh of Kangla Siphai Makha Leikai was paraded before mediapersons along with recovered money and the wares used by her for performing the said rites and rituals at the head office of AMADA here today.
Sanamacha reportedly convinced gullible public that there money could be multiplied through performing certain rites and rituals. She made her victims to kept the money in a box and opened it only after one month. However, during that intervening period, she had decamped with the booty. One of the victims who was present at the occasion, also narrated how she was duped by the woman. The amount recovered from the woman has also been reportedly handed over to their respective owners.
Inpi objects
IMPHAL, May 20: While appreciating the protest rally organised by the NPMHR, TNL, TMNL, TKS and TSL in Ukhrul district headquarters against construction of Mapithel dam yesterday, the Thoubal Area Kuki Inpi has raised strong objection to naming the dam as Mapithel dam.
A press release issued by the Inpi stated that the exact location of the dam site is at Maphou whereas Mapithel is located 20-25 kms away from the dam site. Citing other dams and projects named after their locations like the Loktak Hydro Electric Project, Ethai Barrage, Singda Dam etc, the Inpi asserted that the dam is known to the people as Maphou dam. It further cautioned that naming the dam as Mapithel dam may result in certain misunderstandings among different ethnic groups of the area. The Inpi also urged upon the authority concerned to look into the matter and address it in time.
UG cadres held
IMPHAL, May 20: A PREPAK cadre identified as Wangkheimayum Romio alias Ibo alias Nganthoi (35) s/o W Manglem of Thangmeiband Polem Leikai was arrested by Imphal East commandos from Thambalkhong at about 2.30 pm today, informed SP Imphal East Th Radheshyam in a release. On the other hand, three PLA cadres were apprehended by troops of 23 and 34 Assam Rifles during an operation in Wangjing area today, informed an AR PRO release. The PLA cadres are identified as Moirangthem Romio (27) s/o late Subon, Tekcham Krishnakanta alias Mani alias Nanao (31) s/o P Sanamani of Wangjing Wangkhei Leikon Mayai and Yambem Jamshlee alias Bhusy alias Tamo (31) o Khundrakpam Awang Leikai. All of them have been handed over to Thoubal police station along with one 9 mm pistol (country made), a magazine and six live rounds recovered from their possession., added the release.
KSTC appeals
IMPHAL, May 20: Karong-Senapati Town Committee (KSTC) has appealed to all work agencies concerned to start execution of all developmental work programmes falling within the jurisdiction of the town committee without any further delay for the development and progress of the town. In case of non-compliance to the appeal, KSTC would be constraint to take up corrective and remedial measures, Town committee president A John and secretary SP Liba warned in a joint statement.

IMPHAL, May 20: Unidentified gunmen reportedly fired two rounds at Nongada, the locality of Health Minister Ph Parijat at around 7.30 pm yesterday, according to police report. Nongada falls under the jurisdiction of Lamlai Police Station.

IMPHAL, May 20: Deputy Director of Family Welfare Services, Dr Heisnam Kulabidhu Singh has been selected as the sole representative of India for a fellowship seminar on ‘Epidemiology and control measures of vaccine preventable disease-polio end game’ by the Ministry of PG and Pensions (Department of Training). IMPHAL, May 20: Some unidentified persons fired four rounds of shot at the Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai Leirak Achouba residence of Khangenbam Rameshwar (50) s/o late Jugol at about 4.50 this morning. Rameshwar is the manager of Manipur Rural Bank, Wangjing branch. Even though there was no human casualty in the firing, the tin roof of the second floor was pierced on two spots as the bullets exited through. Another bullet mark was also observed on the wall of the house. On being asked about the possible motive of the attack, Rameshwar said there is no intimation of monetary demand from any group nor any enmity with any group or individual. Taking strong exception to the unprovoked firing in the thickly populated locality, the local Meira Paibis have asked all concerned to come out with an explicit explanation for their action.
Anti-Terrorism Day
IMPHAL, May 20: State Government would be observing Anti-Terrorism Day in Manipur Secretariat, South block at 10.30 am tomorrow. The day is being observed taking the day on which the country’s youngest PM Rajiv Gandhi was killed with a human bomb in Tamil Nadu in 1991. The observation would be graced by Revenue and Law Minister Th Debendra as chief guest, informed a DIPR release.

IMPHAL, May 20: Condemning the killing of innocent civilians on May 15 at NC Hills, a co-ordination committee was constituted in a joint meeting of seven organisations of Lanka (Assam), namely Assam Meetei Chanura Apunba Lup, Achhalik Jatibadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad, NSUI Lanka branch, Progressive Manipuri Student Alliance of Brahmaputra Valley, AMSU Lanka Division, Bengali Student Federation and Nagaon District Meira Paibee Co-ordination Committee on May 17.
The Committe chaired by Ch Indira demanded the Assam Government to grant an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh to the family of deceased and injured persons respectively. The committee also demanded for Government jobs to a family member of the victims. The committe further warned that they would take up various agitation if the demands are not met within seven days.
Lady teachers beaten up
IMPHAL, May 20: The Students’ Union of Mukta High School expressed strong reservations over bashing up of some lady teachers of the school by summoning them at an undisclosed location by some persons who identified themselves as activists of an armed group.
While seeking clarification from the concerned regarding the incident, the students union urged not to repeat the same which can give bad impact to the academic atmosphere of the school.
Office picketing
IMPHAL, May 20: Intensifying its ongoing agitation demanding the unconditional release of Sapamcha Kangleipal, MAFYF will start picketing of Government offices and restriction of movement of State owned vehicles indefinitely from tomorrow, said a press release. However, the restriction will be relaxed on Government schools and Medical Department, the release added.
Meanwhile, demanding the immediate release of Kangleipal, meira paibees of Mayanglangjing area staged a sit-in-protest at Mayanglangjing community hall today.
Chandel hospital
IMPHAL, May 20: Chandel District Hospital is still in a pitiable condition, shortages surround the hospital from all corners, said a press release of Lawyers Group that visited the hospital recently. The operation theatre never functioned again since it stopped in 1991, while the X-ray machine is gathering dust and rust. With the absence of surgeon, child specialist and medicine specialist, patients have to rush to Thoubal or Imphal for even a minor case compelling to shell out huge amount of money. One has to travel upto Kakching even to take a simple X-ray. The hospital is also having only 30 beds, instead of its original capacity of 50 beds.
2 houses gutted
IMPHAL, May 20: Two ho-uses including a rented one located at Nagaram, Imphal were gutted in a fire mishap that broke out at about 11 last night.
Of the two house, one be-longs to Makhonga Gon- mei and Irik Makan while the other belongs to Vengam Shipo Tangkhul.
Four rooms of Makho-nga Gonmei’s house were destroyed by the fire along with properties worth Rs 4 lakhs approximately. For Irik Makan, two rooms and properties worth Rs 3 lakhs approximately were gutted in the fire.
Altogether nine rented rooms belonging to Veng-am Shipo Tangkhul were reduced to cinders besides properties worth Rs 3 lakhs approximately. It is suspected that the fire broke from a leaked LPG cylinder kept inside a rented room of Shipo Tangkhul.
Even though the Fire Brigade was informed about the fire in time, fire tenders arrived at the scene at about 12 midnight when the two houses had already burnt up, said owners of the gutted house.
Pensioners’ woes
Imphal, May 20: Aged pensioners in Tamei subdivision are finding hard to draw their respective pensions as the government authority in Tamenglong district headquarters has asked them to come personally to the district head- quarters. Villages in the Tamei headquarters and interior villages of the subdivision cannot afford to dole out a long distance travelling charge or too old and feeble to travel that far in the rough terrain road between their respective villa- ges and the district headquarters, so these pension- ers pleaded the government authority to accept the authorisation of their kins on their behalves to do the needful.
Earlier the authority in question asked the pensioners to come in person to the district headquarters to take pensioners photos but with the request from some quarters it was agreed upon that if the SDO of the subdivision had no problem, the pensioners could do “the photo job” from the subdivision headquarters itself.
KNF rising day
Lamka, May 20: KNO’s arms wing KNF (MC) says, its 20th Rising Day has been observed with grand success somewhere in Chura- chandpur with homage to three of its founders Pakang Haokip, Nehlun Kipgen and Damkhoseh Gangte and Th German Kuki C-in-C hoisting the organization flag.

Block office torched

IMPHAL, May 20: The blo-ck office of Haorang Sabal under Lamshang Police Station was torched by some unidentified miscreants.
According to informa-tion received by the press, the incident occured at around 9.30 pm today.
Alert locals acted swiftly and apart from making frantic efforts to put off the fire, they also reported the matter to the Fire Brigade.
Timely arrival of the Fire Brigade personnel and collective efforts of the local people managed to extinguish the fire in no time, thus saving the building from suffering any major damage.
Parking arrangement
IMPHAL, May 20: In order to decongest the BT Road and fly-over entry on the western side of Kangla Gate near the traffic island, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Imphal West District has announced that three wheelers/autorickshaws may drop and pick up passengers on the eastern side of Johnstone higher Secondary School on the National Highways as a temporary measures.
In a statement, Senior Superintendent L Kailun, however, made it clear that no three wheelers/autorickshaws more than 20 in number shall be allowed to park at the site at any given point of time.
Henceforth, there shall be no stationary three wheelers/autorickshaws near the traffic island in front of Kangla western gate as well as on the National highway in front of GM Hall, the SSP said while warning that defaulters will be heavily fined according to Motor Vehicle Acts.

Villages in the Tamei headquarters and interior villages of the subdivision cannot afford to dole out a long distance travelling charge or too old and feeble to travel that far in the rough terrain road between their respective villa- ges and the district headquarters, so these pension- ers pleaded the government authority to accept the authorisation of their kins on their behalves to do the needful.
Earlier the authority in question asked the pensioners to come in person to the district headquarters to take pensioners photos but with the request from some quarters it was agreed upon that if the SDO of the subdivision had no problem, the pensioners could do “the photo job” from the subdivision headquarters itself.
KNF rising day
Lamka, May 20: KNO’s arms wing KNF (MC) says, its 20th Rising Day has been observed with grand success somewhere in Chura- chandpur with homage to three of its founders Pakang Haokip, Nehlun Kipgen and Damkhoseh Gangte and Th German Kuki C-in-C hoisting the organization flag.
A statement issued by T Michael Kuki said, the day is celebrated not only in Manipur but in Jiribam and Assam as well. ‘Though the organization KNF is hold various leaders and groups, their main aims and objectives however lies in one accord,’ it quoted the C-in-C as saying.
Block office torched

IMPHAL, May 20: The blo-ck office of Haorang Sabal under Lamshang Police Station was torched by some unidentified miscreants.
According to informa-tion received by the press, the incident occured at around 9.30 pm today.
Alert locals acted swiftly and apart from making frantic efforts to put off the fire, they also reported the matter to the Fire Brigade.
Timely arrival of the Fire Brigade personnel and collective efforts of the local people managed to extinguish the fire in no time, thus saving the building from suffering any major damage.
Parking arrangement
IMPHAL, May 20: In order to decongest the BT Road and fly-over entry on the western side of Kangla Gate near the traffic island, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Imphal West District has announced that three wheelers/autorickshaws may drop and pick up passengers on the eastern side of Johnstone higher Secondary School on the National Highways as a temporary measures.
In a statement, Senior Superintendent L Kailun, however, made it clear that no three wheelers/autorickshaws more than 20 in number shall be allowed to park at the site at any given point of time.
Henceforth, there shall be no stationary three wheelers/autorickshaws near the traffic island in front of Kangla western gate as well as on the National highway in front of GM Hall, the SSP said while warning that defaulters will be heavily fined according to Motor Vehicle Acts.
