Ultimatum
IMPHAL, May 30: Stating that illegal extortion in the name of taxes is still continuing allegedly overriding rights of tribal people guaranteed by the Constitution of India, the RKL, TAKL, ZKL and ZTKL have jointly submitted an ultimatum to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Eastern Division, Ukhrul demanding an immediate halt to the tax collection. Failing to comply with this ultimatum will invite another untoward situation for which the Department concerned will be held responsible.

Protest planned
IMPHAL, May 30: With their business severely affected by prohibition on entry of vehicles to Khwairamband market, shopkeepers running shops from Major Khul to Khoyathong will close their establishments tomorrow and stage a protest sitting at Khoyathong from 9 am. Consequent upon the prohibition, customers to many of these shops have been drastically reduced with some of them even facing closure, conveyed one shopkeeper.

Shirui Club appeals
IMPHAL, May 30: While welcoming all tourists coming to Shirui hills to look at the rare and endangered Siroy Lily, the State flower of Manipur, the Shirui Youth Club has appealed to all the tourists and visitors not to bring intoxicating substances like narcotic drugs, liquor etc and also polluting agents like plastic bags, polythene as well as other non bio-degradable materials. IMPHAL, May 30: Along with a condolence meeting, the first death anniversary of the then commander-in-chief of KLO/KLA Letkholun alias Lhanghal, PRO Genlal alias Gigeon Vaiphei and four other cadres who have killed in an unfortunate incident on May 29, 2007 was observed at the tactical headquarters of the outfit yesterday. TMNL seeks Annulment
IMPHAL, May 30:Asserting that Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL) election held on May 16 was unconstitutional and breached the election code of conduct, 24 functionaries and agents of different TMNL units have demanded annulment of the same election. A joint memorandum submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner of the TMNL asserted that on the election day some units were allowed to cast votes even after the voting hours while many others standing in queue were barred and deprived of their voting rights.
After the voting was over, the ballot papers were bundled under the cover of some unauthorised persons thereby obscuring the agents from witnessing the actual happenings, it alleged. Moreover, there were alterations in the final publication of units electors’ names. The result of the election was also declared without taking the consent/signature of the agents and election commissioners, it disclosed. One unit which was once rejected for proxy (impersonation) was given a second chance despite objections raised by polling agents.
Again a proposal made on behalf of a candidate by one individual who was not an elector was also accepted by commissioners despite verbal complaint raised by the president of the unit to which the candidate belonged at the time of scrutiny. Asserting that the election was grossly unfair and unconstitutional, the joint memorandum sought annulment of the election held on May 16. It further cautioned that refusing to invalidate the election results may snowballed into a major issue.

Medical camp
IMPHAL, May 30: A free medical camp was organised by 12 Maratha Light Infantry under Hqs IG AR (S) at Wangoi Kabui village today, informed an AR PRO release. A total of four doctors from Shija Hospital, CHC Wangoi and a regimental medical officer of the unit took part in the medical camp where 400 civilians were given free medical treatment and medicines. The camp was also assisted by members of the Peoples Protection and Development Committee, added the release.

HC raps officials

IMPHAL, May 30: Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court today served show cause notices to Chairman of Manipur Public Service Commission Lukram Amarjit and Secretary Y Jugindro why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against the duo for defying an earlier ruling of the same court. The response is to be submitted within seven days. The decree is related to a case whereby the court in its previous ruling (February 13, 2008) had asked the MPSC for revision of the July 30, 1997 DPC result concerning promotion of 15 Electricity Department officials to the rank of Executive Engineer. As the MPSC duo listed as the respondent failed to comply with the ruling, the Imphal Bench today served the contempt notices. As per case dossiers, the department’s Officiating EE (retd) N Birendra Singh is the petitioner.

MAFYF reiterates, clarifies
IMPHAL, May 30: Asserting that the issue arising out of the arrest of MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal has become a State issue since Kangleipal was imprisoned after being released by court, MAFYF has reiterated its demand for unconditional release of Kangleipal.
A press release issued by MAFYF said that unconditional release of Kangleipal is the demand of the people of Manipur. Arrest of all the functionaries of all the branches of MAFYF could not silence the demand for release of Kangleipal as the issue has become a State issue, it alleged.
On the other hand, some people taking advatange of the existing people’s agitation burnt down documents of their own office just to cover up their own corrupt practices and shady dealings, it asserted. MAFYF further clarified that the incident of burning office or any act of vandalising public property was not related with the people’s movement being undertaken against the arrest of MAFYF president. It further warned that indefinite economic blockade will be launched on both the National highways from June 11 and this would be followed by total blockade in case the Government fails to respond positively to the ongoing democratic agitation.

Deceased identified
IMPHAL, May 30: The identity of the man shot dead by a combined force of Imphal West commandos and troops of 32 AR at Waikhurok under Patsoi police station during an alleged encounter on May 26 has been established.
The deceased has been identified as Wairokpam Basanta (35) s/o Wairokpam Ibohal of Laikhong.
According to family members, Basanta, a rickshaw puller by profession, was a married man. He left home on May 19.
The corpse has been handed over to family members after completion of post mortem at RIMS at RIMS today.

IMPHAL, May 30: One Kh Romish Devi (26) of Kakching Khunou who was bitten by a snake on her right hand was given anti-snake venom and life saving drug at thea battalion medical inspection room of 21 AR of 9 Sector. She was brought there by her relatives at about 5 pm yesterday. Later the victim was referred to RIMS after her condition stabilised, informed an AR PRO release.

JAC decries
IMPHAL, May 30: Expressing strong disapproval against the Cabinet decision to fix land value at Rs 43.27 per sq feet for residential area and Rs 10.72 per sq feet for agricultural land with respect to the State Government’s initiative to acquire land for construction of NIT at Langol, the JAC for Affected Land Owners of NIT Construction has appealed to the State Government to review the Cabinet decision. A press release issued by the JAC recalled that it submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West on March 28 this year for compensating affected land owners/holders at the rate of Rs 300 to Rs 500 per sq feet if the Government must build NIT at their reported Patta land. Demanding to review the Cabinet decision on land valuation at the earliest, the JAC cautioned that extreme forms of agitation will be launched if their appeal goes unheeded. On the other hand, the JAC has also convened a meeting of all affected land owners at Langol Kuki community hall at 7 am of June 2, conveyed the release.

IMPHAL, May 28: The Project Director and staff of Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) condemned torching of some part of society’s office on May 25. It has caused tremendous loss not only to MACS but also to the people of the State, said a press release. Arson decried
IMPHAL, May 28 : Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) Employees’ Association has strongly condemned the act of setting on fire a portion of the office of the Society by unidentified persons in the early morning of May 25. A meeting of the Association held at MACS office today has appealed to all concerned to come out with a explanation on the incident. In a statement, Association general secretary M Jiten Singh said that the incident of setting fire at the office of MACS has caused serious impediment in implementation of HIV/AIDS control programme and this is really unfortunate not only for MACS but also for the entire State of Manipur. Bid foiled
IMPHAL, May 28 : Demanding unconditional release of MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal, a large number of Meira Paibis today charged toward Thoubal Police Station to court arrest this afternoon. However, police stopped them near the gate. After the Thoubal police told them to go to Imphal for court arrest as they (Thoubal police) have no power to arrest them, the Meira Paibis left the premises of the police station.

KCP refutes
IMPHAL, May 28 : Refuting the police claim, proscribed outfit KCP has clarified that one Moirangthem Dinesh alias Ibungo (35) s/o Nong-maithem Dhiren of Singja- mei Thongam Leikai who has been reportedly arrest-ed by a combined force of Imphal East District Police Commandos and 32 Assam Rifles from his own house in the morning of May 24 has no connection with the outfit in any way. Ukhrul May, 28: Conveying to the general public, cattle owners in particular that the recent deaths of buffaloes in Ukhrul district areas was due to infection from ‘black quarter’ disease, Joint Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Kh Tomba has called upon cattle owners to ensure timely vaccination and preventive measures from the disease. During a brief interaction, Tomba stated that around 12,000 number of domesticated animals (cattle) are being targeted for vaccination since a specific programme was initiated in March this year. Informing that in Phungyar and Ukhrul blocks the vaccination programme is almost complete with active cooperation from the cattle owners and locals, the Joint Director called upon all concerned to contact district level officials of Department for necessary preventive measures.

Women farmers
IMPHAL, May 28: For the first time in Manipur to allow full participation of women in the agricultural activities, the State Directorate of Agriculture is all set to adopt a new pattern of agriculture and implemented the same in Bishnupur district. Starting from the next cultivation season, the project would be taken over an area of 800 paris of land in Bishnupur district with the main objective of setting up model villages. The womenfolk of the district would be encouraged to set up societies among themselves for the implementation of the project and the Agriculture Department would be provided all the required materials right from the stage of planting of paddy saplings to harvesting of the crops. Moreover, experts from Central Agriculture University, Imphal and Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Lamphelpat would be imparting necessary training to the women besides direct monitoring the progress of the work.
The variety of paddy sapling to be provided under the project is IR-64 and after harvesting of the crop, the Department of Agriculture would also procure the product.
The only condition that the Department has placed on the societies which would be implementing the project is to bear the expenditure on ploughing, plantation, weeding and harvesting of the crop. To ensure successful implementation of the project to be implemented under the supervision of the Agriculture Minister, AO Chemistry of Agriculture Department along with around 30 members of Maibam Lokpa Women Farmers’ Society have already conducted soil testing at Kakcheng Loukon Maibam Chingmang in Bishnupur district. AO Chemistry has informed that the responsibility of cultivating over an area of 50 paris of land in the said Loukon would be handed to women farmers. Later on, the soil samples from Nambol Makha Leikai along with members of Panthoibi Women Farmers’ Society.

IMPHAL, May 28: In commemoration of the incident in which three students were shot dead by the State security forces during an agitation demanding adequate infrastructures for education, the 19th Students’ Rights Protection Day was observed at Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School campus today. Organised under the aegis of AMSU Lumlangdong District Committee, the observance function was attended by president of AMSU Headquarters Khamba Laishram as chief guest and president of AMSU Lumlangdong District Committee Robindro Ningthouja as functional president. IMPHAL, May 28: As no agreement could be arrived at during the talks between the JAC and the Government, the body of Md Wahid (29) who was shot dead by a combined force of Police Commandos and Assam Rifles at Keirao Major Ingkhol under Irilbung Police Station on the night of May 25 is still laying at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital. JAC claimed that Md Wahid was an innocent autorickshaw driver who had no connection with any underground organisations.

NGOs Mission appeals to spare civilians
IMPHAL, May 27: The United NGOs Mission has appealed to both the State and non-State actors to respect human lives and to protect lives of civilians.
At a solidarity meet held at Manipur Press Club today with members of the United NGOs Mission Manipur, killing of civilians by State and non-State actors was condemned in the strongest term. They also appealed to stop factional killings among non-State actors.
The solidarity meet took strong exception to the incident of shooting Manipur University student Thokchom Ranjit by security personnel on May 14 as well as the killing of W Shyamjai of Moirang Ngangkhalwai on May 11.
It also condemned the killing of five persons near Saikul public cemetery during a shoot-out between UG groups on May 24 and also the killing of innocent civilians in Dimapur in the last two months.
Many speakers attending the meet observed that recent activities of many UG groups operating in the North East region which were more akin to those of terrorists, deviating from their earlier revolutionary strategy, caused extreme hardships to the common people.
They also appealed to all concerned to spare civilians during confrontation between State and non-State actors for a genuine revolution.
Flaw in old age pension alleged
IMPHAL, May 27: Contending that some MLAs elected from assembly constituencies of Senapati district had been meddling in the distribution of National Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension form, the Saitu Kendra Minority Development Organisation, Sadar Hills has appealed to all concerned to refrain from interfering in the task assigned to officials concerned.
A release of the Organisation maintained that after necessary consent and approval the old age pension forms is being distributed in an egalitarian manner by the DSO, Saitu Gamphazol.
However, due to interference by some MLAs of Senapati with an ulterior motive to favour individuals of the own assembly segment, the Saitu Gamphazol administration has been paralysed leading in delay of completing the process, the statement highlighted while urging all to enable the DSO concerned discharge his duty without any inhibition or under pressure.

IMPHAL, May 27: Under the aegis of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the frontal organisations of Ukhrul will organise a mass rally at Ukhrul tomorrow under the them, “Peace and reconciliation”. IMPHAL, May 27: All the PDS rice agents of Karong A/C, Mao A/C and Tadubi A/C have been directed to deposit advance money for the months of May and June as per their allocated quota of rice to LDC/FCS RK Chinglen on or before May 30, said a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Senapati district Nidhi Kesarwani. In case of failure on the part of the agents to deposit advance money, rice will not be issued for which they would be held responsible., added the Deputy Commissioner.

IMPHAL, May 27: The OC of Saikul police has clarified that he did not talk to the media at all in connection with the killing of five persons at Saikul in the night of May 24. The OC said that he is also not authorised to speak to the media.
HC issues
IMPHAL, May 27 : Acting on a written petition filed by one Elangbam ongbi Tamu Devi of Wabagai Keithel Macha against the killing of her son by Manipur Police commando personnel, a division of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench comprising of Justice BD Agar- wal and Justice Asok Potsa-ngbam today has issued a rule nisi returnable within four weeks, informed a release issued by director of Human Rights Law Network Meihoubam Rakesh.
The petitioner contend-ed that her son Elangbam Dutta Singh s/o late E Madhusudon was picked up by police commandos along with one Sarangthem Sanjoy from the house of one Mainu Devi belonging to the same locality on March 19 this year. At about 9.40 pm of the same day, Dutta was shot dead in a fake encounter at Charoi-bung along IB road, Maya- ng Imphal by the personnel of Manipur police comman-dos, it contended.
On the next day, Dutta’s elder brother E Mohen submitted a written appeal to the DGP to take up nece-ssary against the comman- do personnel in killing his brother after arrest. But there was no response from the DGP. Later Tamu filed a writ petition before the Gauhati High Court on May 26, informed the release. Through the writ petition, the bereaved mother is see-king commensurate com- pensation for killing her son, a judicial enquiry into the arrest and killing of Dutta and to prosecute the perso-nnel involved in the killing.
Three MACS officials pulled up
IMPHAL, May 27: In connection with the arson at the rooms of MACS accountant and procurement officer on May 25 when NACO officials were auditing accounts of MACS, three officials of MACS have been pulled up by Imphal Police today. IMPHAL, May 27: Expressing serious concern over Govt’s failure to book the main culprits involved in stockpiling BPL rice meant for Senapati district in a private godown at Mantri- pukhri, the Poumai Naga Union (PNU) has questioned the rationale behind inking the MoU between representatives of two Naga bodies and the Govt.
Talking to the press over phone, PNU speaker (assembly affairs) Th Apao said, “We cannot accept such MoU before the real culprits are booked”.

Yairipok bandh ends peacefully
IMPHAL, May 24: The bandh called in Yairipok area from 4 am to 8 pm today in protest not just against unaffordable monetary demand from one UG group on the shop-keepers of Yairi-pok Bazar and also in decry of placing a bomb in a shop in this connection thus causing fear and panic among the people ended peacefully.
However, normal activities of the people remained affected on account of the bandh called in accordance to the resolution adopted during a public meeting on May 23.
All the shops and market places remained closed and passenger buses stayed away from the roads of Yairi-pok area during the bandh.
However, Government offices remained functional and the employees attended to the duties.
Meanwhile, while asserting that PULF had never imposed any unbearable amount of money from the people and the money collected by the shop-keepers themselves to be given to the outfit had been handed over to the Assam Rifles by some shop-keepers, secretary publicity cell of the outfit Saroz Khan has as a last warning cautioned the shop-keepers of Yairipok Bazar against any attempt to mislead the outfit through calling of bandh and general strike and hobnobbing with the security forces.

The consultation pro-gramme was attended by Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) WA Shishak as chief guest, MHRC member Ng Nongyai as functional president and former VC of Manipur University IS Khaidem and MHRC member RK Rajendra as guests of honour.
Giving key-note address of the function, MSCW chairperson Dr Ch Jamini highlighted the activities and experiences of MSCW since its establishment.
She stated that mental, psychological and physical re-integration of women victims of social crimes and domestic violence is the first objective of the Commission.
To facilitate re-integration of such women, it is not enough to pay attention to the victimised women only. It also needs thorough counselling of the family members of their husbands. As such, the Commission has taken up family counselling initiatives, she said.
In its short period of about one year and a half, the MSCW came across 50 different cases. Of these, many women victimised in several cases have been successfully re-integrated, Jamini informed.
On the new campaign, “Wake up, women” launch-ed today, Jamini said that a series of seminars and workshops on welfare progra- mmes, issues and problems related to wo- men would be organised under the campaign. Re- commendations adopted in these seminars and workshops would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for further necessary actions, Jamini said.

Review meeting
IMPHAL, May 24: A late evening meeting today chaired by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has reviewed the progress of the developmental projects and sch- emes being taken up under NEC and NLCPR in the State. During the meeting attended by Ministers, Chi-ef Secretary, Principal Secr- etary (Planning) and Commissioners and Secretaries of the Departments responsible for implementation of the NEC and NLCPR funded schemes and proj-ects, the Chief Minister has asked the officials concerned to ensure submis- sion of the utilisation certificates of the works that have already been completed and identify those which are still pending. IMPHAL, May 22: In connection with the mysterious disappearance of the PDS rice allotted to Senapati district for the month of Nov- ember last year, one FCS Inspector and a Delivery Ass- istant have been suspend-ed. Inspector Lawrence and Delivery Assistant L Ibom-cha, attached to Senapati DC office were suspended acting on report of the enquiry instituted into the scam.
The enquiry was instituted following seizure of 2120 quintals of BPL rice under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) along with challans for lifting the rice from a private godown located at Mantripukhri on January 3 this year by FCS Minister Y Erabot. It has also been directed that the suspe-nded officials should not leave station without permi-ssion of the Deputy Commi- ssioner, Senapati district.

Medical camp organised
IMPHAL, May 20: A reproductive child health outreach medical camp was organised by Primary Health Centre (PHC), Somdal at Aphung village in Ukhrul district under the sponsorship of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) on May 17.
Three stalls were put up under three sections — general, ayush and malaria — during the camp marked by the participation of villagers from Torah, Torah Shimhon, Upper and Lower Leisan, Maichon, Khamason, Aphung Shimhon under the care of doctors and nurses from PHC Somdal, said a release of secretary Aphung village authority Mr Jonathan.

AMADA pulls up fraud

IMPHAL, May 20: AMADA Govindgram Local Council has been able to pull up a woman who has been duping gullible people of their hard-earned month by promising that their money could be multiplied after performing certain rites and rituals.
A total amount of Rs 1,48,900 she had swindled from the gullible public in this manner has also been recovered by AMADA.
The woman identified as Chungkham Ningol Sanamacha alias Phajabi alias Pakpi Devi (40) d/o Chungkham Shangaijao Singh of Kangla Siphai Makha Leikai was paraded before mediapersons along with recovered money and the wares used by her for performing the said rites and rituals at the head office of AMADA here today.
Sanamacha reportedly convinced gullible public that there money could be multiplied through performing certain rites and rituals. She made her victims to kept the money in a box and opened it only after one month. However, during that intervening period, she had decamped with the booty. One of the victims who was present at the occasion, also narrated how she was duped by the woman. The amount recovered from the woman has also been reportedly handed over to their respective owners.

Inpi objects
IMPHAL, May 20: While appreciating the protest rally organised by the NPMHR, TNL, TMNL, TKS and TSL in Ukhrul district headquarters against construction of Mapithel dam yesterday, the Thoubal Area Kuki Inpi has raised strong objection to naming the dam as Mapithel dam.
A press release issued by the Inpi stated that the exact location of the dam site is at Maphou whereas Mapithel is located 20-25 kms away from the dam site. Citing other dams and projects named after their locations like the Loktak Hydro Electric Project, Ethai Barrage, Singda Dam etc, the Inpi asserted that the dam is known to the people as Maphou dam. It further cautioned that naming the dam as Mapithel dam may result in certain misunderstandings among different ethnic groups of the area. The Inpi also urged upon the authority concerned to look into the matter and address it in time.

Even though there was no human casualty in the firing, the tin roof of the second floor was pierced on two spots as the bullets exited through. Another bullet mark was also observed on the wall of the house. On being asked about the possible motive of the attack, Rameshwar said there is no intimation of monetary demand from any group nor any enmity with any group or individual. Taking strong exception to the unprovoked firing in the thickly populated locality, the local Meira Paibis have asked all concerned to come out with an explicit explanation for their action.
 
Anti-Terrorism Day
IMPHAL, May 20: State Government would be observing Anti-Terrorism Day in Manipur Secretariat, South block at 10.30 am tomorrow. The day is being observed taking the day on which the country’s youngest PM Rajiv Gandhi was killed with a human bomb in Tamil Nadu in 1991. The observation would be graced by Revenue and Law Minister Th Debendra as chief guest, informed a DIPR release.

Committee constituted
IMPHAL, May 20: Condemning the killing of innocent civilians on May 15 at NC Hills, a co-ordination committee was constituted in a joint meeting of seven organisations of Lanka (Assam), namely Assam Meetei Chanura Apunba Lup, Achhalik Jatibadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad, NSUI Lanka branch, Progressive Manipuri Student Alliance of Brahmaputra Valley, AMSU Lanka Division, Bengali Student Federation and Nagaon District Meira Paibee Co-ordination Committee on May 17.
The Committe chaired by Ch Indira demanded the Assam Government to grant an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh to the family of deceased and injured persons respectively. The committee also demanded for Government jobs to a family member of the victims. The committe further warned that they would take up various agitation if the demands are not met within seven days.

Lady teachers beaten up
IMPHAL, May 20: The Students’ Union of Mukta High School expressed strong reservations over bashing up of some lady teachers of the school by summoning them at an undisclosed location by some persons who identified themselves as activists of an armed group.
While seeking clarification from the concerned regarding the incident, the students union urged not to repeat the same which can give bad impact to the academic atmosphere of the school.

Office picketing
IMPHAL, May 20: Intensifying its ongoing agitation demanding the unconditional release of Sapamcha Kangleipal, MAFYF will start picketing of Government offices and restriction of movement of State owned vehicles indefinitely from tomorrow, said a press release. However, the restriction will be relaxed on Government schools and Medical Department, the release added.
Meanwhile, demanding the immediate release of Kangleipal, meira paibees of Mayanglangjing area staged a sit-in-protest at Mayanglangjing community hall today.

Chandel hospital
IMPHAL, May 20: Chandel District Hospital is still in a pitiable condition, shortages surround the hospital from all corners, said a press release of Lawyers Group that visited the hospital recently. The operation theatre never functioned again since it stopped in 1991, while the X-ray machine is gathering dust and rust. With the absence of surgeon, child specialist and medicine specialist, patients have to rush to Thoubal or Imphal for even a minor case compelling to shell out huge amount of money. One has to travel upto Kakching even to take a simple X-ray. The hospital is also having only 30 beds, instead of its original capacity of 50 beds.

2 houses gutted
IMPHAL, May 20: Two ho-uses including a rented one located at Nagaram, Imphal were gutted in a fire mishap that broke out at about 11 last night.
Of the two house, one be-longs to Makhonga Gon- mei and Irik Makan while the other belongs to Vengam Shipo Tangkhul.
Four rooms of Makho-nga Gonmei’s house were destroyed by the fire along with properties worth Rs 4 lakhs approximately. For Irik Makan, two rooms and properties worth Rs 3 lakhs approximately were gutted in the fire.
Altogether nine rented rooms belonging to Veng-am Shipo Tangkhul were reduced to cinders besides properties worth Rs 3 lakhs approximately. It is suspected that the fire broke from a leaked LPG cylinder kept inside a rented room of Shipo Tangkhul.
Even though the Fire Brigade was informed about the fire in time, fire tenders arrived at the scene at about 12 midnight when the two houses had already burnt up, said owners of the gutted house.

Pensioners’ woes
Imphal, May 20: Aged pensioners in Tamei subdivision are finding hard to draw their respective pensions as the government authority in Tamenglong district headquarters has asked them to come personally to the district head- quarters. Villages in the Tamei headquarters and interior villages of the subdivision cannot afford to dole out a long distance travelling charge or too old and feeble to travel that far in the rough terrain road between their respective villa- ges and the district headquarters, so these pension- ers pleaded the government authority to accept the authorisation of their kins on their behalves to do the needful.
Earlier the authority in question asked the pensioners to come in person to the district headquarters to take pensioners photos but with the request from some quarters it was agreed upon that if the SDO of the subdivision had no problem, the pensioners could do “the photo job” from the subdivision headquarters itself.

KNF rising day
Lamka, May 20: KNO’s arms wing KNF (MC) says, its 20th Rising Day has been observed with grand success somewhere in Chura- chandpur with homage to three of its founders Pakang Haokip, Nehlun Kipgen and Damkhoseh Gangte and Th German Kuki C-in-C hoisting the organization flag.

Block office torched

IMPHAL, May 20: The blo-ck office of Haorang Sabal under Lamshang Police Station was torched by some unidentified miscreants.
According to informa-tion received by the press, the incident occured at around 9.30 pm today.
Alert locals acted swiftly and apart from making frantic efforts to put off the fire, they also reported the matter to the Fire Brigade.
Timely arrival of the Fire Brigade personnel and collective efforts of the local people managed to extinguish the fire in no time, thus saving the building from suffering any major damage.

Parking arrangement
IMPHAL, May 20: In order to decongest the BT Road and fly-over entry on the western side of Kangla Gate near the traffic island, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Imphal West District has announced that three wheelers/autorickshaws may drop and pick up passengers on the eastern side of Johnstone higher Secondary School on the National Highways as a temporary measures.
In a statement, Senior Superintendent L Kailun, however, made it clear that no three wheelers/autorickshaws more than 20 in number shall be allowed to park at the site at any given point of time.
Henceforth, there shall be no stationary three wheelers/autorickshaws near the traffic island in front of Kangla western gate as well as on the National highway in front of GM Hall, the SSP said while warning that defaulters will be heavily fined according to Motor Vehicle Acts.

PDA urges
IMPHAL, May 13: The People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) has appealed to the Governor to promulgate the proposed Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (3rd Amendment) Ordinance 2008 by observing the provision of the Article 371 (C) of the Constitution of India and Clause 1 and 3 of the Hill Areas Committee Order, 1972.
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, a copy of which has been ma-de available to the press, the PDA urged upon the Governor to preserve the sanctity of the relevant Constitutional provision in respect of the subject matter of the proposed Ordinance.
It further alleged that the Governor failed in his constitutional duty when the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Bill 2008 was introduced in the Manipur Legislative Assembly during the third session after obtaining recommendation of Governor as if Money Bill whereas District Council Act is not at all within the purview of the Money Bill as it falls within the ‘Schedule matter’.

UGs fall to police dragnet
IMPHAL, May 13 : One UNLF cadre was arrested by Imphal West police commandos from the rented house of one Sorojini Devi of Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak today at about 1 pm. In a statement, SP of Imphal West said that the arrest was effected following specific inputs. The arrested cadre has been identified as Thokchom Okendro alias Joy alias Khambaton alias Boby alias Santhoi (32) of nambol kabo Waching Khunou.
Another PREPAK cadre was also arrested today at about 2 pm from Keishampat bus parking, said the SP and identified him as Toijam Jekki Meitei (22) of Yairipok Yambem Mayai Leikai. One Aircel mobile phone 9856426972 was seized from his possession.
In another incident, one PLA cadre identified as Amarjit alias Bikash (27) s/o Y Brojen of Lamboikhongnang Makhong was apprehended by troops of 12 Maratha LI of 9 sector under Hqs IG AR (S) from his locality on May 11, informed an AR PRO release adding that the individual has been handed over to Lamphel police station.
On the other hand, Imphal East Police Commandos reportedly arrested two PULF cadres from two different places yesterday.
According to a statement issued by SP of Imphal East District Th Radheshyam Singh, the PULF cadre identified as Md Nazimuddin alias Tomba (48) s/i late Md Zamaruddin of Lilong Haoreibi Mayai Leikai was arrested from Hatta Minuthong at around 3 pm yesterday.
On verification, Md Nazimuddin disclosed that he joined PULF in 2007 and now working in project department of the outfit. He also disclosed that he was involved in the kidnapping of Government officials for ransom, the SP said.
The SP further informed that another PULF cadre identified as Md Salim alias Javed (44) s/o Md Kamer Jaman of Khurai Khomidok Mayai Leikai but presenting staying at Kshetri Chandam leikai was arrested from Kshetri Chandam Leikai at around 6.30 pm yesterday.
On verification, Md Salim disclosed that he is an active member of PULF Azad faction and he joined the outfit in January 2000 through one Md Tahir Ali alias Jamin of Hatta Golapati and now working under the command of S/S chief project officer of PULF identified as Miss Sony and was involved in extortion of money from different Government departments, the SP added.

KRPA warns
IMPHAL, May 13: Sharply reacting to the press statement of the UKRA published on May 7 issue, the Komrem People Army (KRPA) has warned the UKRA not to publish internal matters again.
A press release issued by information and publicity secretary of the KRPA Joshua asserted that former Kom Union president M Mangloler Kom was cheating people acting on the alleged ill-advice of the likes of UKRA thereby creating disunity among the people.

Trucks stranded
IMPHAL, May 13: Dozens of goods-laden trucks have been stranded at Gularthal, Jiribam due to the economic blockade being called by ATSUM, reports our Jiribam correspondent.
Meanwhile, the Ananda Mela which has been running for the past one month at Jirighat in Cachar district of Assam was disrupted by a police team headed by SDPO Lakhipur. The police have reportedly given the permission to host the mela till May 10 only.

IMPHAL, May 13: One kilogram of opium worth Rs 50,000 in international market was seized from Dhan- anjay Sahu (21) of Kari-khana, Naogaon district, Assam by personnel of Nar-cotics and Border Affairs Board (NAB) at about 4.30 pm today. Dhananjay Sahu was staying in a rented house at Ragailong.

Deceased identified
IMPHAL, May 13: The identity of the man shot dead by a combined team of Imphal East commandos and troops of 32 Assam Rifles in a reported encounter at Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai last night has been established.
The deceased is one Kangjam Romesh alias Inaobi (32) of Okram Chuthek Makha Kitna Panung.
According to family members, Romesh was a Nat Sankritan artiste although he was arrested by security forces on two occasions earlier. The corpse has been handed over to family members after post mortem today.
One found dead: One man with non-local appearance was found dead at the verandah of INA High School, Kwakta under Moirang police station last night.
Police have retrieved the corpse this morning and deposited at RIMS mortuary for identification.

Nungba Citizens’ Council urges
IMPHAL, May 13: Stating that the Manipur State Disaster Management Authority and District Disaster Authority for Tamenglong district have been constituted under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005 enacted the Government of India, the Nungba Citizens’ Council (NCC) has urged upon the State Government to open a Relief and Disaster Management Centre at Nungba or Noney in Ta-menglong district to tackle and minimise the impacts of na- tural calamities like pest attack, land slide, fire, flood, hailstorm, bamboo flowering and crop damage by rodents etc.
A press release issued by the NCC further appealed to the Health Department to establish an accident and emergency (trauma) centre in Tamenglong district, preferably at Noney or Nungba along NH 53 in view of the frequent road mishaps taking place along the highway.

Inter-State bus service to resume
IMPHAL, May 13: Taking into account of the inconveniences and difficulties being endured by the people fol- lowing suspension of inter-State bus service, the All Ma-nipur Inter-State Bus Association has decided to suspend its stir and to resume bus service from tomorrow (May 14).

JFM progress discussed in a joint meeting
IMPHAL, Apr 30: In retrospection of the work progress of JFM in Nungba sub-division (Nungba, Noney Ranges), a joint meeting between the Forest Department, Tamenglong district and Nungba Citizens’ Council was held on April 17 at the DFO office, Mantripukhri, Imphal. The meeting minutely discussed the ongoing process of implementing JFM in Nungba and Noney ranges under DFO L Gopal Singh and ROs of the district. The meeting felt that in the absence of any mineral resources, the Central Government has sanctioned JFM scheme as an alternative means of preventing deforestation through Jhuming and shifting cultivation traditionally being practised by the hill people for their livelihood. Accordingly, the meeting decided to conduct a joint inspection of the works (EPA) being carried out in different villages and resolved that those JFMCs which were found carrying out their works not satisfactorily will be recommended for exclusion from implementation of the scheme. In a statement, NCC secretary MS Franky has also appealed to concerned to make a speedy progress of the work and increase the area under the scheme to 2000 hectares for the Tamenglong district.

Imphal, Apr 30: The 3rd Lamkang community cultural festival ‘Totlangkam Festival, 2008’ will start from May 1 till May 3 at Lamkang-Naga Kver Kunpun (LNKK) headquarters at Phaidaam village in Chandel district of Manipur with much cultural extravaganzas. Accused house master expelled from locality

IMPHAL, Apr 30: In connection with ill-treatment of Pinky, a young girl working as domestic help, a public meeting held today has decided to expel contractor Thiyam Rajgopal of Wang-khei Ningthem Pukhri Ma- pal and his family members from the locality.
The public meeting held at the office complex of Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lup located at Ningthem Pukhri Mapal was also attended by members of Maharaj Garibniwas Memorial Club, LCP, Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lup and representatives from Heirok, the birthplace of Pinky.
Wife of Rajgopal, Thiyam Ongbi Kunjeshori admitted to ill-treatment of Pinky and sought the forgiveness of the people during the meeting.
Inspite of that the meeting resolved that Rajgopal and his family members should leave the locality within 10 days.
The meeting further resolved Rajgopal should be held responsible if any person is intimidated in connection with this incident. The meeting also resolved that Pinky would be handed over to Children Home facilitated by Child Line.

IMPHAL, Apr 30: Allaying apprehension, if any, following reports of four children dying in Tamil nadu after measles vaccination, the Family Welfare Services, Govt of Manipur has clarified that there is no cause for such worry in the State as measles vaccines are being procured from/supplied by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.

IMPHAL, Apr 30: Secretary of Union Commerce and Industries JK Pillai who is scheduled to arrive here on a three-day visit on May 6 is expected to go to Churachandpur and attend a workshop there.
