IMPHAL, May 30: Stating that illegal extortion in the name of taxes is still continuing allegedly overriding rights of tribal people guaranteed by the Constitution of India, the RKL, TAKL, ZKL and ZTKL have jointly submitted an ultimatum to the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Eastern Division, Ukhrul demanding an immediate halt to the tax collection. Failing to comply with this ultimatum will invite another untoward situation for which the Department concerned will be held responsible.

IMPHAL, May 30: With their business severely affected by prohibition on entry of vehicles to Khwairamband market, shopkeepers running shops from Major Khul to Khoyathong will close their establishments tomorrow and stage a protest sitting at Khoyathong from 9 am. Consequent upon the prohibition, customers to many of these shops have been drastically reduced with some of them even facing closure, conveyed one shopkeeper.

IMPHAL, May 30 : With a difference, school kids of Grace English Jr high School, Molnom greeted Works Minister and his team with placards asking them to finance an excursion tour. Taken by surprise with the request of the school kids, Works Minister K Ranjit gifted them Rs 15,000 while MLA Hangkhanlian followed with Rs 10,000. PWD officials also chipped in with Rs 5000 each.

IMPHAL, May 30: While welcoming all tourists coming to Shirui hills to look at the rare and endangered Siroy Lily, the State flower of Manipur, the Shirui Youth Club has appealed to all the tourists and visitors not to bring intoxicating substances like narcotic drugs, liquor etc and also polluting agents like plastic bags, polythene as well as other non bio-degradable materials. A press release issued by the club further sought cooperation from all sections in the efforts to conserve this rare and endangered flower species.

IMPHAL, May 30: Along with a condolence meeting, the first death anniversary of the then commander-in-chief of KLO/KLA Letkholun alias Lhanghal, PRO Genlal alias Gigeon Vaiphei and four other cadres who have killed in an unfortunate incident on May 29, 2007 was observed at the tactical headquarters of the outfit yesterday. Led by current commander-in-chief of KLO/KLA Timothy Kuki, many social leaders who attended the condolence meeting described their death as a great loss to the society. The gathering also shared in the grief and sorrow of the bereaved families.

TMNL seeks Annulment
IMPHAL, May 30:Asserting that Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL) election held on May 16 was unconstitutional and breached the election code of conduct, 24 functionaries and agents of different TMNL units have demanded annulment of the same election. A joint memorandum submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner of the TMNL asserted that on the election day some units were allowed to cast votes even after the voting hours while many others standing in queue were barred and deprived of their voting rights.
After the voting was over, the ballot papers were bundled under the cover of some unauthorised persons thereby obscuring the agents from witnessing the actual happenings, it alleged. Moreover, there were alterations in the final publication of units electors’ names. The result of the election was also declared without taking the consent/signature of the agents and election commissioners, it disclosed. One unit which was once rejected for proxy (impersonation) was given a second chance despite objections raised by polling agents.
Again a proposal made on behalf of a candidate by one individual who was not an elector was also accepted by commissioners despite verbal complaint raised by the president of the unit to which the candidate belonged at the time of scrutiny. Asserting that the election was grossly unfair and unconstitutional, the joint memorandum sought annulment of the election held on May 16. It further cautioned that refusing to invalidate the election results may snowballed into a major issue.
Medical camp
IMPHAL, May 30: A free medical camp was organised by 12 Maratha Light Infantry under Hqs IG AR (S) at Wangoi Kabui village today, informed an AR PRO release. A total of four doctors from Shija Hospital, CHC Wangoi and a regimental medical officer of the unit took part in the medical camp where 400 civilians were given free medical treatment and medicines. The camp was also assisted by members of the Peoples Protection and Development Committee, added the release.

IMPHAL, May 30: Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court today served show cause notices to Chairman of Manipur Public Service Commission Lukram Amarjit and Secretary Y Jugindro why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against the duo for defying an earlier ruling of the same court. The response is to be submitted within seven days. The decree is related to a case whereby the court in its previous ruling (February 13, 2008) had asked the MPSC for revision of the July 30, 1997 DPC result concerning promotion of 15 Electricity Department officials to the rank of Executive Engineer. As the MPSC duo listed as the respondent failed to comply with the ruling, the Imphal Bench today served the contempt notices. As per case dossiers, the department’s Officiating EE (retd) N Birendra Singh is the petitioner.
MAFYF reiterates, clarifies
IMPHAL, May 30: Asserting that the issue arising out of the arrest of MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal has become a State issue since Kangleipal was imprisoned after being released by court, MAFYF has reiterated its demand for unconditional release of Kangleipal.
A press release issued by MAFYF said that unconditional release of Kangleipal is the demand of the people of Manipur. Arrest of all the functionaries of all the branches of MAFYF could not silence the demand for release of Kangleipal as the issue has become a State issue, it alleged.
On the other hand, some people taking advatange of the existing people’s agitation burnt down documents of their own office just to cover up their own corrupt practices and shady dealings, it asserted. MAFYF further clarified that the incident of burning office or any act of vandalising public property was not related with the people’s movement being undertaken against the arrest of MAFYF president. It further warned that indefinite economic blockade will be launched on both the National highways from June 11 and this would be followed by total blockade in case the Government fails to respond positively to the ongoing democratic agitation.
Deceased identified
IMPHAL, May 30: The identity of the man shot dead by a combined force of Imphal West commandos and troops of 32 AR at Waikhurok under Patsoi police station during an alleged encounter on May 26 has been established.
The deceased has been identified as Wairokpam Basanta (35) s/o Wairokpam Ibohal of Laikhong.
According to family members, Basanta, a rickshaw puller by profession, was a married man. He left home on May 19.
The corpse has been handed over to family members after completion of post mortem at RIMS at RIMS today.

IMPHAL, May 30: One Kh Romish Devi (26) of Kakching Khunou who was bitten by a snake on her right hand was given anti-snake venom and life saving drug at thea battalion medical inspection room of 21 AR of 9 Sector. She was brought there by her relatives at about 5 pm yesterday. Later the victim was referred to RIMS after her condition stabilised, informed an AR PRO release.

IMPHAL, May 30: Expressing strong disapproval against the Cabinet decision to fix land value at Rs 43.27 per sq feet for residential area and Rs 10.72 per sq feet for agricultural land with respect to the State Government’s initiative to acquire land for construction of NIT at Langol, the JAC for Affected Land Owners of NIT Construction has appealed to the State Government to review the Cabinet decision. A press release issued by the JAC recalled that it submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West on March 28 this year for compensating affected land owners/holders at the rate of Rs 300 to Rs 500 per sq feet if the Government must build NIT at their reported Patta land. Demanding to review the Cabinet decision on land valuation at the earliest, the JAC cautioned that extreme forms of agitation will be launched if their appeal goes unheeded. On the other hand, the JAC has also convened a meeting of all affected land owners at Langol Kuki community hall at 7 am of June 2, conveyed the release.
