MACS fire
IMPHAL, May 28: The Project Director and staff of Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) condemned torching of some part of society’s office on May 25. It has caused tremendous loss not only to MACS but also to the people of the State, said a press release. MACS in a meeting convened today urged the concerned not to disturb the normal functioning of the society and victimisation of the employees. Meanwhile, maintaining that those involved in torching of MACS’s office room are against the ongoing campaign against HIV/AIDS, USER Manipur urged the concerned authority to book the culprits into book at the earliest.

Amnesty report
IMPHAL, May 28: Joining other parts of the globe, Amnesty International today release its annual report for the year 2008 at Manipur Press Club. Manipur Human Rights Commission Chairperson WA Shishak, Centre for Peace Education Manipur senior secretary Dr L Leiren, KUMHR chairperson Dr T Lumkin and ISTV news-editor Y Rupachandra graced the function as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

Science workshop
IMPHAL, May 28: Manipur Public School in collaboration with Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search, Kolkata today kicked off a four-day science workshop on ‘Current Scenario of Nanotechno-logy’ at Manipur Public School, Koirengei. The workshop is being organised under DoNER project.

Agri courses
IMPHAL, May 28: Agriculture Department invited application forms from intending candidates for selection of State nominees for four years Degree courses of BSc (Agri), BTech (Agri Engg) and BSc (Home Science).
Last date of form submission is June 21. Details can be had from the Directorate of Agriculture office, Sanjenthong, said a press release.

MR CO refutes SP
IMPHAL, May 28 : Responding to the news item that Taib Ali of Mantripukhri who was rescued by Imphal West police commandos and Assam Rifles troops from the clutches of KCP (MC) on May 27, the CO of 5 MR has today clarified that Ali is not a personnel of 5 MR as reported. The report that Ali belongs to the 5 MR was published as per a statement issued by the SP of Imphal West. When The Sangai Express contacted the SP of Imphal West this evening, the officer said that the statement that Ali belongs to the 5 MR was issued on the basis of what he said.

Arson decried
IMPHAL, May 28 : Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) Employees’ Association has strongly condemned the act of setting on fire a portion of the office of the Society by unidentified persons in the early morning of May 25. A meeting of the Association held at MACS office today has appealed to all concerned to come out with a explanation on the incident. In a statement, Association general secretary M Jiten Singh said that the incident of setting fire at the office of MACS has caused serious impediment in implementation of HIV/AIDS control programme and this is really unfortunate not only for MACS but also for the entire State of Manipur. Instead of giving any sort of hindrance, Jiten appealed to all the people and organisations to extend their co-operation and support in the HIV/AIDS control programme being carried out under the aegis of MACS.

Bid foiled
IMPHAL, May 28 : Demanding unconditional release of MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal, a large number of Meira Paibis today charged toward Thoubal Police Station to court arrest this afternoon. However, police stopped them near the gate. After the Thoubal police told them to go to Imphal for court arrest as they (Thoubal police) have no power to arrest them, the Meira Paibis left the premises of the police station.

KCP refutes
IMPHAL, May 28 : Refuting the police claim, proscribed outfit KCP has clarified that one Moirangthem Dinesh alias Ibungo (35) s/o Nong-maithem Dhiren of Singja- mei Thongam Leikai who has been reportedly arrest-ed by a combined force of Imphal East District Police Commandos and 32 Assam Rifles from his own house in the morning of May 24 has no connection with the outfit in any way. The outfit further clarified that apart from Project Officer Major Nongthang there is no Project Officer called Santosh in KCP.

IMPHAL, May 28: to deliberate on terms and conditions for seeking assistance from the national Fisheries Development Board secretaries of Ngayok Marups functioning under the Directorate of Fisheries are informed to be present at a special meeting being convened on June 5 at 11 am at the Directorate’s office in Lamphelpat.

Liquor seized
IMPHAL, May 28: Based on specific information, troops 12 Maratha LI during a night patrol seized 300 ltrs of country liquor from a jeep having registration number MN-01 Z 0875 and apprehended three individuals today. The arrested persons were later handed over to Kwakeithel Police Station.

‘Black quarter’ in Ukhrul

Ukhrul May, 28: Conveying to the general public, cattle owners in particular that the recent deaths of buffaloes in Ukhrul district areas was due to infection from ‘black quarter’ disease, Joint Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Kh Tomba has called upon cattle owners to ensure timely vaccination and preventive measures from the disease. During a brief interaction, Tomba stated that around 12,000 number of domesticated animals (cattle) are being targeted for vaccination since a specific programme was initiated in March this year. Informing that in Phungyar and Ukhrul blocks the vaccination programme is almost complete with active cooperation from the cattle owners and locals, the Joint Director called upon all concerned to contact district level officials of Department for necessary preventive measures.

Global AIDS week
IMPHAL, May 28: Social Awareness Service Organisation (SASO) and Action Aid, India jointly observed Global AIDS Week starting from May 24 with the observance of International Candlelight Memorial. The observance was marked with a signature campaign and discussion sessions which were participated by representatives from SASO, India HIV/AIDS Alliance, Action Aid India, Manipur Network for Positive People and Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

TSA draws attention
IMPHAL, May 28: With the Government failed to keep its promises, Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) drew the attention of Education Minister on the MoU singed between the two sides on October 17, 2007 in which commitment was made by the State Government regarding improvement of infrastructure and sending of required teachers. Internet literacy
IMPHAL, May 28:Community Information Centre (CIC), Imphal West District Headquarters, State Central Library, Imphal would be conducting Internet literacy programme (Community Information Centre) and Computer Literacy Programme (Indira Gandhi National Open University) with effect from June 2.
The duration of the training programme is 2 months and students of class -10 passed from any recognised schools are eligible to participate in the training programme.

AMADA volunteers
IMPHAL, May 28: Conveying that AMADA is an organisation sacrificed for the wellbeing of the society, Women Association for Civic Action Kangleipak (WACAK), Unemployed Pharmacists Association of Manipur, Cosmopolitan Youth Club, Ibudhou Khunjaoba Women’s Meira Paibi Lup and Kongba Laishram Leikai Nupi Marup urged the Government to release all the 18 volunteers of AMADA.

Army saves life
IMPHAL, May 28: Doctors of 12 MLI saved the life one Kh Jadu (45) of Malom Awang Leikai by giving him timely treatment on May 27 when he was bitten by a highly poisonous snake. Jadu was referred to civil hospital after his condition was stabilised, said a press of PRO IGAR (S).

Women farmers
IMPHAL, May 28: For the first time in Manipur to allow full participation of women in the agricultural activities, the State Directorate of Agriculture is all set to adopt a new pattern of agriculture and implemented the same in Bishnupur district. Starting from the next cultivation season, the project would be taken over an area of 800 paris of land in Bishnupur district with the main objective of setting up model villages. The womenfolk of the district would be encouraged to set up societies among themselves for the implementation of the project and the Agriculture Department would be provided all the required materials right from the stage of planting of paddy saplings to harvesting of the crops. Moreover, experts from Central Agriculture University, Imphal and Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Lamphelpat would be imparting necessary training to the women besides direct monitoring the progress of the work.
The variety of paddy sapling to be provided under the project is IR-64 and after harvesting of the crop, the Department of Agriculture would also procure the product.
The only condition that the Department has placed on the societies which would be implementing the project is to bear the expenditure on ploughing, plantation, weeding and harvesting of the crop. To ensure successful implementation of the project to be implemented under the supervision of the Agriculture Minister, AO Chemistry of Agriculture Department along with around 30 members of Maibam Lokpa Women Farmers’ Society have already conducted soil testing at Kakcheng Loukon Maibam Chingmang in Bishnupur district. AO Chemistry has informed that the responsibility of cultivating over an area of 50 paris of land in the said Loukon would be handed to women farmers. Later on, the soil samples from Nambol Makha Leikai along with members of Panthoibi Women Farmers’ Society.

Students’ Rights Day
IMPHAL, May 28: In commemoration of the incident in which three students were shot dead by the State security forces during an agitation demanding adequate infrastructures for education, the 19th Students’ Rights Protection Day was observed at Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School campus today. Organised under the aegis of AMSU Lumlangdong District Committee, the observance function was attended by president of AMSU Headquarters Khamba Laishram as chief guest and president of AMSU Lumlangdong District Committee Robindro Ningthouja as functional president. Ex-president of AMSU Lumlangdong District Committee Irengbam Tomba, Naosekpam Singhajit, Binoy Luwang, Nupi Samaj president Keisham Taruni and CADA Bishnupur District Committee president Ashalata were also present at the occasion as guests of honour. Offering of floral tributes to the three martyred students namely Uritkhinbam Khelen, Haobijam Ibohal and Salam Sarat at their memorial installed inside the complex of the school and speeches by various resource persons on the rights and duties of the students were the main highlights of the observance.

Entrepreneurs selected
IMPHAL, May 28: Manipur Food Industries Corporation Ltd informed the entrepreneurs who attended the interview held on May 16 for allotment of plots for the establishment of food processing units at Food Park, Nilakuthi that names for 31 selected entrepreneurs are displayed on the office notice board. The Corporation also informed the selected entrepreneurs to contact the office before June 15 between 2 pm and 4 pm.

Computer programme
IMPHAL, May 28: State Central Library informed the interesting candidates that Internet Literacy Programme under Community Information Centre (CIC) and Computer Literacy Programme under IGNOU will commence from June 2. Students having passed matriculation may join the said programmes. Last date of form submission is June 2, while trainees will be selected on first come first serve basis, said a press release.

Wahid killing
IMPHAL, May 28: As no agreement could be arrived at during the talks between the JAC and the Government, the body of Md Wahid (29) who was shot dead by a combined force of Police Commandos and Assam Rifles at Keirao Major Ingkhol under Irilbung Police Station on the night of May 25 is still laying at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital. JAC claimed that Md Wahid was an innocent autorickshaw driver who had no connection with any underground organisations.

Land survey
IMPHAL, May 28: Directorate of Settlement and Land Records informed the land holders of 66-Langthabal Mantrikhong, 67-Langthabal Kunja, 73-Naran Konjin and 74-Takhellambam Konjin and 106-Hiyangthang to present either personally or through their duly authorised agents at the fields for showing the boundaries of the village and their own land. The detail field survey is starting from May 26, said a press release.

Kulladhwaja selected
IMPHAL, May 28: Konsam Kulladhwaja of Sagolband Khuraijam Leirak has been selected for Senior Fellowship in Manipuri Literature for the year 2008 by Union Ministry of Culture. The fellowship carries an amount of Rs 12, 000 per month for a perios of two years.

Prize distribution
IMPHAL, May 28: Sanskar Bharti and Imphal Art College will distribute prizes for the painting competition held to mark the anniversary of ‘First War of Independence 1857’ on May 31.
