PDA urges
IMPHAL, May 13: The People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) has appealed to the Governor to promulgate the proposed Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (3rd Amendment) Ordinance 2008 by observing the provision of the Article 371 (C) of the Constitution of India and Clause 1 and 3 of the Hill Areas Committee Order, 1972.
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, a copy of which has been ma-de available to the press, the PDA urged upon the Governor to preserve the sanctity of the relevant Constitutional provision in respect of the subject matter of the proposed Ordinance.
It further alleged that the Governor failed in his constitutional duty when the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council Bill 2008 was introduced in the Manipur Legislative Assembly during the third session after obtaining recommendation of Governor as if Money Bill whereas District Council Act is not at all within the purview of the Money Bill as it falls within the ‘Schedule matter’.
UGs fall to police dragnet
IMPHAL, May 13 : One UNLF cadre was arrested by Imphal West police commandos from the rented house of one Sorojini Devi of Sagolband Tera Lukram Leirak today at about 1 pm. In a statement, SP of Imphal West said that the arrest was effected following specific inputs. The arrested cadre has been identified as Thokchom Okendro alias Joy alias Khambaton alias Boby alias Santhoi (32) of nambol kabo Waching Khunou.
Another PREPAK cadre was also arrested today at about 2 pm from Keishampat bus parking, said the SP and identified him as Toijam Jekki Meitei (22) of Yairipok Yambem Mayai Leikai. One Aircel mobile phone 9856426972 was seized from his possession.
In another incident, one PLA cadre identified as Amarjit alias Bikash (27) s/o Y Brojen of Lamboikhongnang Makhong was apprehended by troops of 12 Maratha LI of 9 sector under Hqs IG AR (S) from his locality on May 11, informed an AR PRO release adding that the individual has been handed over to Lamphel police station.
On the other hand, Imphal East Police Commandos reportedly arrested two PULF cadres from two different places yesterday.
According to a statement issued by SP of Imphal East District Th Radheshyam Singh, the PULF cadre identified as Md Nazimuddin alias Tomba (48) s/i late Md Zamaruddin of Lilong Haoreibi Mayai Leikai was arrested from Hatta Minuthong at around 3 pm yesterday.
On verification, Md Nazimuddin disclosed that he joined PULF in 2007 and now working in project department of the outfit. He also disclosed that he was involved in the kidnapping of Government officials for ransom, the SP said.
The SP further informed that another PULF cadre identified as Md Salim alias Javed (44) s/o Md Kamer Jaman of Khurai Khomidok Mayai Leikai but presenting staying at Kshetri Chandam leikai was arrested from Kshetri Chandam Leikai at around 6.30 pm yesterday.
On verification, Md Salim disclosed that he is an active member of PULF Azad faction and he joined the outfit in January 2000 through one Md Tahir Ali alias Jamin of Hatta Golapati and now working under the command of S/S chief project officer of PULF identified as Miss Sony and was involved in extortion of money from different Government departments, the SP added.
KRPA warns
IMPHAL, May 13: Sharply reacting to the press statement of the UKRA published on May 7 issue, the Komrem People Army (KRPA) has warned the UKRA not to publish internal matters again.
A press release issued by information and publicity secretary of the KRPA Joshua asserted that former Kom Union president M Mangloler Kom was cheating people acting on the alleged ill-advice of the likes of UKRA thereby creating disunity among the people.
Trucks stranded
IMPHAL, May 13: Dozens of goods-laden trucks have been stranded at Gularthal, Jiribam due to the economic blockade being called by ATSUM, reports our Jiribam correspondent.
Meanwhile, the Ananda Mela which has been running for the past one month at Jirighat in Cachar district of Assam was disrupted by a police team headed by SDPO Lakhipur. The police have reportedly given the permission to host the mela till May 10 only.
Opium seized
IMPHAL, May 13: One kilogram of opium worth Rs 50,000 in international market was seized from Dhan- anjay Sahu (21) of Kari-khana, Naogaon district, Assam by personnel of Nar-cotics and Border Affairs Board (NAB) at about 4.30 pm today. Dhananjay Sahu was staying in a rented house at Ragailong.
Hall inaugurated
IMPHAL, May 13: A community hall built at Kinthanlong (Ramji) village with financial assistance from GC CRPF Langjing was inaugurated today by Addl DIGP GC CRPF Imphal Anil Duggal. Speaking at the occasion Anil Duggal assured more such assistance to the villagers in future, conveyed a release.

Deceased identified
IMPHAL, May 13: The identity of the man shot dead by a combined team of Imphal East commandos and troops of 32 Assam Rifles in a reported encounter at Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai last night has been established.
The deceased is one Kangjam Romesh alias Inaobi (32) of Okram Chuthek Makha Kitna Panung.
According to family members, Romesh was a Nat Sankritan artiste although he was arrested by security forces on two occasions earlier. The corpse has been handed over to family members after post mortem today.
One found dead: One man with non-local appearance was found dead at the verandah of INA High School, Kwakta under Moirang police station last night.
Police have retrieved the corpse this morning and deposited at RIMS mortuary for identification.
Nungba Citizens’ Council urges
IMPHAL, May 13: Stating that the Manipur State Disaster Management Authority and District Disaster Authority for Tamenglong district have been constituted under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 2005 enacted the Government of India, the Nungba Citizens’ Council (NCC) has urged upon the State Government to open a Relief and Disaster Management Centre at Nungba or Noney in Ta-menglong district to tackle and minimise the impacts of na- tural calamities like pest attack, land slide, fire, flood, hailstorm, bamboo flowering and crop damage by rodents etc.
A press release issued by the NCC further appealed to the Health Department to establish an accident and emergency (trauma) centre in Tamenglong district, preferably at Noney or Nungba along NH 53 in view of the frequent road mishaps taking place along the highway.
Inter-State bus service to resume
IMPHAL, May 13: Taking into account of the inconveniences and difficulties being endured by the people fol- lowing suspension of inter-State bus service, the All Ma-nipur Inter-State Bus Association has decided to suspend its stir and to resume bus service from tomorrow (May 14).
This was decided at a meeting of the association held today, informed a release.
Body unclaimed
IMPHAL, May 13: With the State Government and the JAC constituted in connection with the death of Mayengbam Tomba in a shoot-out between KNF (P) and USRA cadres at Ngamukhong under Yairipok police station on May 11 still unable to arrive at an understanding, the corpse still remains unclaimed at RIMS mortuary.
MUSU dissolved
IMPHAL, May 13: With the approval of its letter of dissolution submitted to the Dean, Students’ Welfare, MU, the Manipur University Students’ Union 2007-08 has been dissolved with immediate effect, informed a MUSU release.
Ukhrul body thanks
IMPHAL, May 13: The Educated Unemployed Youth Association, Ukhrul has conveyed gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul district for financial assistance to seven widows and disabled persons, conveyed a release.
