Yairipok bandh ends peacefully
IMPHAL, May 24: The bandh called in Yairipok area from 4 am to 8 pm today in protest not just against unaffordable monetary demand from one UG group on the shop-keepers of Yairi-pok Bazar and also in decry of placing a bomb in a shop in this connection thus causing fear and panic among the people ended peacefully.
However, normal activities of the people remained affected on account of the bandh called in accordance to the resolution adopted during a public meeting on May 23.
All the shops and market places remained closed and passenger buses stayed away from the roads of Yairi-pok area during the bandh.
However, Government offices remained functional and the employees attended to the duties.
Meanwhile, while asserting that PULF had never imposed any unbearable amount of money from the people and the money collected by the shop-keepers themselves to be given to the outfit had been handed over to the Assam Rifles by some shop-keepers, secretary publicity cell of the outfit Saroz Khan has as a last warning cautioned the shop-keepers of Yairipok Bazar against any attempt to mislead the outfit through calling of bandh and general strike and hobnobbing with the security forces.

Consultation prog held

IMPHAL, May 24: Along with oganising a one day consultation programme at its office located in the office complex of DC, Imphal West today, Manipur State Commission for Women has launched its campaign titled “Wake up, women”.
The consultation pro-gramme was attended by Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) WA Shishak as chief guest, MHRC member Ng Nongyai as functional president and former VC of Manipur University IS Khaidem and MHRC member RK Rajendra as guests of honour.
Giving key-note address of the function, MSCW chairperson Dr Ch Jamini highlighted the activities and experiences of MSCW since its establishment.
She stated that mental, psychological and physical re-integration of women victims of social crimes and domestic violence is the first objective of the Commission.
To facilitate re-integration of such women, it is not enough to pay attention to the victimised women only. It also needs thorough counselling of the family members of their husbands. As such, the Commission has taken up family counselling initiatives, she said.
In its short period of about one year and a half, the MSCW came across 50 different cases. Of these, many women victimised in several cases have been successfully re-integrated, Jamini informed.
On the new campaign, “Wake up, women” launch-ed today, Jamini said that a series of seminars and workshops on welfare progra- mmes, issues and problems related to wo- men would be organised under the campaign. Re- commendations adopted in these seminars and workshops would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for further necessary actions, Jamini said.

LNC hails topper
Imphal, May 24: Liangmai Naga Council (LNC), the apex social organisation of the Liangmai community has expressed profound joy over the superb performance of Ronald Kungsaomakbou Abonmei the 2008 HSLC examination conducted by Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BSEM). On behalf of the Liangmai community, LNC President Ch.Dithinbou congratulated Ronald Kungsaomakbou Abonmei who stood fourth position in the HSLC examination,2008. The LNC chief said that the “extraordinary” performance of the Abonmei boy has brought laurel to the Liangmai community. Ch.Dithinbou then stated that the achievement of Kungsaomakbou Abonmei will go down in the history of Liangmai community which will also boost up the morale of Liangmai students’ community. The LNC also congratulated all the Liangmai students who have passed out with flying colours in this year’s Class-X and Class-XII examinations.

Review meeting
IMPHAL, May 24: A late evening meeting today chaired by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has reviewed the progress of the developmental projects and sch- emes being taken up under NEC and NLCPR in the State. During the meeting attended by Ministers, Chi-ef Secretary, Principal Secr- etary (Planning) and Commissioners and Secretaries of the Departments responsible for implementation of the NEC and NLCPR funded schemes and proj-ects, the Chief Minister has asked the officials concerned to ensure submis- sion of the utilisation certificates of the works that have already been completed and identify those which are still pending. It may be noted here that schemes and proj-ects with total estimated cost of Rs 426 crores and Rs 42 crores are respectively being taken up in the State under NLCPR and NEC.

KSO drive
IMPHAL, May 24: The KSO Kana Block, Chandel district has decided to look into the functioning of educati-onal institutions and health centres within Kana block, whether they are run by Go-vernment or private to en- sure better development and upliftment of the people, informed a release issued by the student body.
If any irregularity such as improper functioning of the institutes, absence or staff or teacher etc are detected during the drive, ne- cessary action will be initiated against them by infor- ming the matter to the authority concerned. Inspec- tion of all institutions will begin from May 30.
Further, the KSO Kana block has also congratulated all successful candida- tes of class X and class XII examinations conducted by BSEM and COHSEM.

Water harvesting tanks built
IMPHAL, May 24: 18 Assam Rifles constructed 16 units of rooftop rain water harvesting tanks based on Ferro Cement Technology at Tengnoupal village under operation samaritan. Tengnoupal villagers have to travel around 1 km in the hilly footpaths to fetch waters. Keeping these hardships in mind, AR initiated the economically viable project, said a press release.

Telecom snag
IMPHAL, May 24: Due to a technical snag, the BSNL is unable to provide mobile phone and WLL service to its customers under Kangpokpi BTs since May 23, informed a release issued by JTO, BSNL Kangpokpi.

GOC visits
IMPHAL, May 24: 3 Corps GOC Lt Gen MS Dadwal during his visit to the State met Chief Minister O Ibobi and Governor SS Sidhu today and discussed the pre- vailing security situation of the State. He was accompanied by IGAR (S) Maj Gen AK Choudhary and 57 Mountain Div GOC Maj Gen TS Handa.

Books distributed free of cost to students
IMPHAL, May 24: As part of the concreted efforts being made to promote scientific education among the students of the State, All India Students’ Federation (AISF), Heirok Zonal Council and Eastern Musical Association (EMA) Band Party, Heirok have distributed free text books to the students of Advanced Learner English School, Heirok Part-I, Heitupokpi.

Seminar held
UKHRUL, May 24: A one day district level seminar on career guidance was organised here by All Manipur Catholic Union (AMCU) today at St Andrew Church in Phungreitang Ukhrul under the sponsorship of Bosco Mangaal, Don Bosco Chingmeirong Imphal.
In the event which was marked by the presence of hundreds of people representing different walks of life, Father MC George, director of BOSCO Mangaal spoke on career guidance as the main resource person.
Among other dignitaries, senior news reader of AIR Imphal Edmund Chiphang, AMCU president, programme officer of AMCU Jimmy Leivon and district agriculture officer Louis Ngasainao attended the programme.

Awareness camp
IMPHAL, May 24: A two-day residential awareness camp on the theme of ‘Hou-jik Manipuri Oiriba Fibam Ashida Meira Paibigi Thou-dang’ (Role of Meira Paibis in the present context of Manipur) concluded at Jiri Town hall today, reports our Jiribam correspondent.
The camp was organised by Apunba Jiri Meira Paibi Lup.

Bomb found
IMPHAL, May 24: An explosive with wire was disco- vered at the eastern si-de of NH 39 near Suresh Oil Pump, Lilong at about 3.30 pm today. The bomb was safely retrieved by explosive experts of Manipur Police.
