NGOs Mission appeals to spare civilians
IMPHAL, May 27: The United NGOs Mission has appealed to both the State and non-State actors to respect human lives and to protect lives of civilians.
At a solidarity meet held at Manipur Press Club today with members of the United NGOs Mission Manipur, killing of civilians by State and non-State actors was condemned in the strongest term. They also appealed to stop factional killings among non-State actors.
The solidarity meet took strong exception to the incident of shooting Manipur University student Thokchom Ranjit by security personnel on May 14 as well as the killing of W Shyamjai of Moirang Ngangkhalwai on May 11.
It also condemned the killing of five persons near Saikul public cemetery during a shoot-out between UG groups on May 24 and also the killing of innocent civilians in Dimapur in the last two months.
Many speakers attending the meet observed that recent activities of many UG groups operating in the North East region which were more akin to those of terrorists, deviating from their earlier revolutionary strategy, caused extreme hardships to the common people.
They also appealed to all concerned to spare civilians during confrontation between State and non-State actors for a genuine revolution.
Flaw in old age pension alleged
IMPHAL, May 27: Contending that some MLAs elected from assembly constituencies of Senapati district had been meddling in the distribution of National Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension form, the Saitu Kendra Minority Development Organisation, Sadar Hills has appealed to all concerned to refrain from interfering in the task assigned to officials concerned.
A release of the Organisation maintained that after necessary consent and approval the old age pension forms is being distributed in an egalitarian manner by the DSO, Saitu Gamphazol.
However, due to interference by some MLAs of Senapati with an ulterior motive to favour individuals of the own assembly segment, the Saitu Gamphazol administration has been paralysed leading in delay of completing the process, the statement highlighted while urging all to enable the DSO concerned discharge his duty without any inhibition or under pressure.
Mass rally
IMPHAL, May 27: Under the aegis of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the frontal organisations of Ukhrul will organise a mass rally at Ukhrul tomorrow under the them, “Peace and reconciliation”. To ensure a peaceful passage of the mass rally and a public meeting to be held thereafter, the organisations have asked all to close down shops, offices, institutions and cease the movement of vehicles during the event, according to our Ukhrul Correspondent.
PDS rice
IMPHAL, May 27: All the PDS rice agents of Karong A/C, Mao A/C and Tadubi A/C have been directed to deposit advance money for the months of May and June as per their allocated quota of rice to LDC/FCS RK Chinglen on or before May 30, said a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Senapati district Nidhi Kesarwani. In case of failure on the part of the agents to deposit advance money, rice will not be issued for which they would be held responsible., added the Deputy Commissioner.
OC clarifies
IMPHAL, May 27: The OC of Saikul police has clarified that he did not talk to the media at all in connection with the killing of five persons at Saikul in the night of May 24. The OC said that he is also not authorised to speak to the media.
HC issues
IMPHAL, May 27 : Acting on a written petition filed by one Elangbam ongbi Tamu Devi of Wabagai Keithel Macha against the killing of her son by Manipur Police commando personnel, a division of the Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench comprising of Justice BD Agar- wal and Justice Asok Potsa-ngbam today has issued a rule nisi returnable within four weeks, informed a release issued by director of Human Rights Law Network Meihoubam Rakesh.
The petitioner contend-ed that her son Elangbam Dutta Singh s/o late E Madhusudon was picked up by police commandos along with one Sarangthem Sanjoy from the house of one Mainu Devi belonging to the same locality on March 19 this year. At about 9.40 pm of the same day, Dutta was shot dead in a fake encounter at Charoi-bung along IB road, Maya- ng Imphal by the personnel of Manipur police comman-dos, it contended.
On the next day, Dutta’s elder brother E Mohen submitted a written appeal to the DGP to take up nece-ssary against the comman- do personnel in killing his brother after arrest. But there was no response from the DGP. Later Tamu filed a writ petition before the Gauhati High Court on May 26, informed the release. Through the writ petition, the bereaved mother is see-king commensurate com- pensation for killing her son, a judicial enquiry into the arrest and killing of Dutta and to prosecute the perso-nnel involved in the killing.
Three MACS officials pulled up
IMPHAL, May 27: In connection with the arson at the rooms of MACS accountant and procurement officer on May 25 when NACO officials were auditing accounts of MACS, three officials of MACS have been pulled up by Imphal Police today. According to information received from a police source, accountant A Ashanta, his assistant Ibehaibi and procurement officer S Ibobi were pulled up today. Cheque register and cash book of MACS were destroyed in the arson.

IMPHAL, May 27: Consultant orthopaedic surgeon of Shija Hospitals Dr Ibomcha Thokchom has been invited by National Hospital, Nishitaga, Sendai (Japan) for a three month course on ‘advanced technology and management in spinal surgery and joint replacement’, informed a release.
Conveying that Dr Ibom-cha had already undergone spinal surgery training from NIMHANS, Bangalore, the release said Dr Ibomcha would leave Imphal for Tokyo on May 30.

IMPHAL, May 27: Top three highest markers scorers each of Senapati, Ukh- rul, Chandel, Churachand-pur and Tamenglong with be felicitated with cash awards and mementos at a felicitation function scheduled for June 7 at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, said ICHAM in a press release which is organising the function.

IMPHAL, May 27: Troops of 21 Assam Rifles have apprehended a KYKL cadre identified as Ch Majibur Rahman alias Ch Inao s/o Ch Abdul Jabar of Shanthel, from Kakching area during an operation yesterday, said a release issued by PRO IGAR (S) today.
One motor cycle (Pulsar) bearing registration No MH04/B3268, purse containing Rs 62, an SBI ATM Card and a mobile phone handset (Nokia-1100) have been recovered from the possession of Rahman, who has been handed over to Kakching police station yesterday, it added .
SDSA demands
IMPHAL, May 27: A joint meeting of the Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) and the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA) has decided to take up immediate steps to affect the transfer of Deputy Commissioner of Senapati district allegedly in the interest of the general public.
SDSA accused DC Nidhi Kesarwani of creating con-frontation between her security and the public by deploying more security in her office besides remaining totally non-cooperative to the people. The joint meet-ing also resolved to check irregularities to ensure accountability of the PDS in Senapati district.
Meanwhile, NPO has asked DSO RK Binoy to surrender at its office within this month failing which stringent actions will be initiated against the DSO.

Violence, killings protested
IMPHAL, May 27: In protest against frequent incidents of killing captured/arrested activists of armed organisation, random firing, bomb explosion and absence of sense of security, a sit-in-protest followed by a condemnation rally was organised at Langol Tarung Public Ground yesterday, said Ruangmei Lu Pham (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland).
Pointing to the May 24 shooting incident near the residential area, the Langol Tarung-based body on behalf of numerous organisations contended that the victim was brought and killed along the Tarung road by police commandos.
Many speakers addressing the gathering during the agitation strongly condemned alleged extra-judicial activities of the commandos, the release informed and added that highlighting such unwanted incidents in the vicinity of Langol Tarung village a memorandum had also been submitted to the Governor Dr SS Sidhu for his personal intervention and immediate redressal measures.
PNU questions
IMPHAL, May 27: Expressing serious concern over Govt’s failure to book the main culprits involved in stockpiling BPL rice meant for Senapati district in a private godown at Mantri- pukhri, the Poumai Naga Union (PNU) has questioned the rationale behind inking the MoU between representatives of two Naga bodies and the Govt.
Talking to the press over phone, PNU speaker (assembly affairs) Th Apao said, “We cannot accept such MoU before the real culprits are booked”.
While demanding to rescind such alleged unsub- stantial and meaningless MoU, the PNU urged that the due rice quota for five months should reach deserving beneficiaries of Se- napati district immediately.
