Suspected UGs shoot dead two

IMPHAL, Jul 5: At least two persons were shot dead by unidentified persons suspected to be underground activists in separate incidents in the last 24 hours.

50-year old Md Basir, of Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai, died at RIMS hospital around 2 am today after he was wounded in indiscriminate firing by several gunmen on his house last night.

According to the wife of the deceased, Rahtuna Bibi, 45, some five to six armed gunmen came to their home late in the night and tried to get her husband to accompany them for some `discussion`. When he refused at her insistence, the gunmen fired indiscriminately at the house, in the course of which her husband was badly wounded.

She said the gunmen fired some 20 rounds, one of which hit her husband in the lower left abdomen after penetrating the walls of the house. Her husband was evacuated to RIMS hospital and succumbed to his injuries there at around 2 pm.

In another incident, the bullet-riddled body of a youth was recovered at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai under Imphal west police station this morning. The deceased youth, who is as yet unidentified, was found shot twice in the head.
